Al,

Have you looked at buying gold sovereigns or Britannias? These are both legal tender, so no capital gains tax on them unlike with bars.

Can anyone tell me a good place to buy gold bars (1oz) on-line for a small retail investor? I will need the option to sell back as well. Not talking vast amount but something is better than nothing to supplement my MML holding.

many thanks
Al

I sincerely hope that this is the worm turning!
The politicians succeeded in kicking the can down the road after the 2008 financial crash.
However thus far in 2016 the markets seem to be saying that they can no longer effectively postpone what
Happened in 1930 to 1933

Time will tell we need gold to have a sustained run to benefit the juniors.

Cheers guys good links, all the things with the banks, re neg rates= move to cash trading etc should see gold become desirable once again , and back in the teens area before to long,if it does, Medusas profits will rocket, and with that the share price as well.

A couple of articles relating to the gold and negative interest rate theme.

The implications for gold are already being recognised in Switzerland:

And the move to force people out of short-term deposits is just starting in Japan (an economy 7X bigger):

The World Bank put out a nice short primer on negative interest rates back in June 2015 (but with no reference to the implications for gold).

Since then rates have gone more negative and more countries have joined the negative rate bloc. But note that the World Band has this to say in June:

"At the extreme, if central banks pushed rates too far into negative territory, there is a risk that large sectors of the economy could become cash-based."

Since then we have been rapidly moving toward the extreme; and if cash becomes king, then gold will get a lot more attention too.

Justin:Thanks for your insights into MML trading patterns. Not something we have that much on this bb. It is much appreciated.Roguetreader:Looks like whoever sold $1.2b of gold on the back of poor NFP numbers (why!! - only too obvious) failed to keep the price down for long. Great gold price recovery.hTTp://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-02-05/gold-surges-back-green-after-12-billion-morning-plungeCheers,Niels

I mentioned a few days back that I thought the Bank of Japan's announcement of negative interest rates was hugely bullish for gold long term. I notice that this thesis is popping up in other places. Just to highlight the crazy world we have entered into, here is an article in FT Alphaville with a great chart showing the Euro and Swiss yield curves.

Interest rates in Switzerland are negative all the way out to 10-year bonds and are very negative at the short end, and euro rates are moving along the same path. This kind of interest rate set up will crush bank profits. Banks will have no choice but to actively dissuade deposits. Yesterday, Nomura in Japan announced that they were shutting some of their money market funds since BOJ policy had made such funds impossible to operate at a profit. So savers in the negative interest rate countries (rapidly growing) are going to have to find somewhere to park their money and I think some of it will end up in gold.

A big thank you to all those who have contributed such excellent posts on this board. The quality of the posts is a credit to those posting.

It has been mooted that there should be a visit to the Philipinnes, I hope this comes off and I look forward to read the match reports.
It reminds me of a book I read last year "How to become a millionaire ~ Slowly" by the ex MP John Lee (I think he is Lord Lee now).
Basically he has invested the maximum amount allowable in ISA's each year since they were introduced.
He was thin on charts, analysis and spread sheets. Instead he relies on making judgements on the Chairman and Directors of shares he is interested in by attending AGM's and visits to the Companies presentations.
By investing in this way and keeping the shares longterm his ISA portfolio is now worth over a million.
If the visit comes off I believe those attending will benefit as much as by all the analysing they may do.

Dek,

My goodness, 97, she must have witnessed so much in her life. Make sure you ask her lots of questions about her family etc. I certainly wish I had done so with my extended family. Once they are gone it is too late!

Good luck. I hope things are not too difficult.

Eintracht, after doing a little more research I see they are quite a substantive firm and well known in financial circles, so I think you are probably correct.

I doubt they would have invested that much without doing some serious research and questioning the company / management thoroughly.

Just had a quick look at Ruffer (as I'd never heard of them), where they state on their website:

'We have a distinctive investment approach, focused on producing consistent returns and not losing money. For each of our clients, our aim is to strike the right balance between risk and reward while avoiding the explosive ups and downs of the market cycle.'

AND

'Because our senior staff share in the long–term profitability of the firm, they are interested in solid and sustainable investment returns rather than speculative trading, so they tend to stick with us for the long haul.'

MML might seem a slightly strange investment choice for Ruffer reading the above, as I would have thought most mainstream Investment Firms would surely see MML as being to some degree 'speculative' and currently not producing 'consistent and sustainable' investment returns. It would suggest that if they are in principle a fairly conservative investment organisation, then they must be reasonably confident in their MML investment. But then maybe I'm just being over optimistic.

Chipperfrd,A good performance by MML in Oz last night :-).O/TYes DTO was a perfect little investment. Only hold one oiler presently, PPC, small producer, but good reserves. Upside is that it is producing in Argentina, so they are not so affected by the oil price slump.Have discovered oil in Paraguay, but didn't manage to get it to flow. On Argentina alone they should be valued around 20-30p, but currently are around 6p. Poor sentiment in the oil sector currently.Peter Levine is running the show and has a big chunk of the company. Hopefully he can do what he did in Russia here.Worth a look. Good bb although there is a lot of moaning about the current situation.Cheers,Niels
