11/1/2018 13:56 | Loads of MKS stuff on Alphaville......I see BOO is even -3& n trading update. Apparently Steve Rowe was really downbeat on the conference call... the selloff this morning seems to be on no particular change to consensus ........ so I guess must be on Rowe's downbeat-ness. Which is a touch weird, because M&S should be priced either as a cash cow (still +10 per cent free cashflow yield, remarkably) or a longer term turnaround play. | philanderer
11/1/2018 11:30 | East, also may be worth bearing in mind the wider UKX is at record levels here, would MKS buck a trend if the FTSE were 5-10% lower?, doubt that myself. | essentialinvestor
11/1/2018 11:25 | Eastbourne , fair points and agree if you want to trade it. I've bought and will hold for the forseeable future for income. I see the range more as 290p - 340p. No getting away from it today's update was very weak. "Marks and Spencer’s are suffering. Their signature luxury products are being undercut by bargain supermarkets at a fraction of the price. Shoppers expect quality and convenience for less than ever before, and M&S simply aren’t offering that at the moment.” M&S said like-for-like revenues fell 1.4% in the 13 weeks to 30 December. Clothing and homeware fell 2.8%, while food, seen as its most successful sector, was down 0.4%. Marks and Spencer, still the UK's biggest clothing retailer, saw sales in fashion and homewares go into reverse again, after positive results the previous year. And it has underperformed in food. bbc.co.uk | philanderer
11/1/2018 11:21 | On the 24 May last year it hit 397.80. Highest close was 393.40 same day. . | freedom97
11/1/2018 10:46 | You say the share price will probably never hit £4 again, it was nearly at this level last May, for the best part of two years the price has traded between £3 and £4. I think this trend will continue over the next year. Currently it's a trading share imho, i.e. buy near £3, sell at £3.50 - £3.75 and bank circa 20%. That is how I see it. The update today was disappointing however the share price is only down a few %, the market seems reluctant to take this considerably lower at the moment. | eastbourne1982
11/1/2018 10:19 | This share is never going to make you rich . You buy it for the hopefully 5% dividend and that's the risk . Companies like M&S are running hard , cutting costs just to standstill in the evolving retail environment. You buy it for income. This share will never be 500p again and probably never 400p. Buy it for income , but of course it comes with a risk when it offers that sort of yield. | philanderer

11/1/2018 09:52 | FCF is the key here, would not get to hung up on top line figures. FCF dives the dividend and valuation in the medium/long term. | essentialinvestor
11/1/2018 09:39 | If Steve can not deliver, really don't see many other options. There also needs to be some realism imv, any growth is going to be exceptionally difficult, it's a case of maximising profitability. | essentialinvestor

11/1/2018 08:17 | If this so called accelerated transformation programme doesn't materialise then what next?...will the CEO step down or be sacked with share and bonus clawback?...or they will think of plan B to keep lifestyle going... | diku
11/1/2018 08:16 | I did warn avoid retail John Lewis done the best but profits will be significantly down. JL say competition will increase more volatility. House of Fraser sales down 2.9% looks bleak. | simon templar qc
11/1/2018 07:52 | Steve Rowe added: "We continue with the accelerated transformation programme we outlined in November and have recently taken several important steps to reshape the business for the future. These include a new technology partnership and organisation, and the sale of our Hong Kong based business in line with the streamlined franchise-led model we are adopting for International." We will report our Full Year results on 23 May 2018. I look forward to seeing the Full Year results. | freedom97
11/1/2018 07:21 | Very poor, not simply lacklustre, food bailed this one out, what will the effect be on margin, just last week there seemed to be queues of folk returning goods at M&S, Trinity Leeds! | bookbroker
11/1/2018 07:13 | One word to describe an M&S Christmas...lacklust Not that great. If this carries on, M&S will need to be taken over. How many times have we heard about never ending restructuring i'm disappointed but will continue to add on any weakness if only for divi. | leadersoffice

10/1/2018 12:25 | M&S poaches Dixons Carphone finance chief Humphrey Singer The announcement comes less than 24 hours before the retailer updates the City on its Christmas trading performance. Marks & Spencer has poached a top executive at Dixons Carphone to become its new finance chief. The appointment of Humphrey Singer, first reported by Sky News, was announced less than 24 hours before M&S updates the City on its Christmas trading performance. Mr Singer, who has been with Dixons since 2007, served as group finance director of Dixons Carphone since the company was created in a merger with Carphone Warehouse in 2014. He will replace Helen Weir, who is due to leave M&S on 31 March. M&S chief executive Steve Rowe said: "Humphrey will be a great addition to the top team. "His experience as part of the team that led Dixons through its period of change and migration to multi-channel retailer is most relevant to what we are undertaking here." | philanderer

10/1/2018 07:59 | Morning All, Many thanks for the posting the news links phil. As for the 'Modest fashion' range M&S are selling, if those that complained about using the word 'Modest', had first typed into google 'Modest fashion' they would have realized it's now a very popular term used by many companies here and in other countries. Wikipedia has a large piece on the meaning of 'Modest fashion' and explains a lot of misconceptions surrounding modest fashion or modest style: "The term modest fashion refers to fashion trend of wearing less skin revealing clothes. The exact interpretation of 'modest' varies across cultures and countries. There is no unambiguous interpretation as it is influenced by socio-cultural characterizations of each country. Beyond the various interpretations, all agree on the idea that modest fashion means loose clothing, comfortable dressing and covering of the body according to person's own comfort..." "Modest fashion came to limelight thanks to many fashionistas like Dina Tokio and websites like Unique Hijabs, Haute Hijab, MODESTyle, etc." MKS is correct in saying there is a growing demand for the Modest Fashion style. | freedom97 |
