Market report:

Only two of the UK benchmark index’s stocks survived the plunge to sneak into positive territory. Tesco bucked the downward trend on the markets, climbing 1.2p to 199.9p, after it came out as the fastest-growing “big four” supermarket in monthly industry sales figures.

The UK’s biggest supermarket benefited from its highly promotional strategy, Jefferies argued as Marks & Spencer retreated just 3.9p to 289.1p on signs of improvement in its food department.

'This Is Money' is the Daily Express of financial journalism, always exaggerating or sensationalizing stories. Eg, shock/horror - "20 of 650 HoF suppliers no longer covered by credit insurance"....which is barely 3% of them. Also HoF has been in decline for many years, so falling sales there is hardly a surprise.

Jane Sydenham, investment director at the stockbrokers Rathbones, told the BBC the falls did not appear to herald a serious change of sentiment: "It is always a bit too early to tell, but I think these recent market falls are in the nature of a correction.

"What we have to remember is stock markets have had a very smooth ride upwards and we've not had a fall of more than 3% for 15 months. There's been a real lack of volatility, which is very unusual."

She added that bear markets tend to happen ahead of a recession and at the moment growth forecasts were being upgraded.
