More home grown and reared food pleaseBy JOHNREDWOOD | Published: OCTOBER 20, 2020Yesterday in the Commons I raised again the issue of more home grown produce. The fresh food in supermarkets packaged with the UK flag is popular and usually of excellent quality. Many of us want to keep the food miles down, keep the standards up, and support UK agriculture.I saw a film recently which said that tomatoes grown in modern greenhouses in carefully controlled environments can yield up to forty times the weight of product that a typical outdoors plant can achieve. It can also be much easier to pick. Modern methods of growing strawberries under polythene or glass can prolong the UK growing season, produce great fruit and simplify picking. The same film reminded viewer of the how many orchards had to be grubbed up in the 1970s as a tidal wave of tariff free continental imports came into our market and offered cheaper product than the domestic fruit. Under the Common Agricultural Policy and the tariff free EU food regime we have seen a decline of around one fifth in domestically produced temperate food, whilst we have had at the same time to protect the EU growers from cheaper competition from outside the EU with tariffs against the most efficient world producers. If the EU persists in denying the UK a Free Trade Agreement with no tariffs by insisting on there being a high price for such an obvious thing to grant, then there will be tariffs against EU food imports. We will presumably choose to lower our food tariffs compared to the high EU ones. As these tariffs come to apply to the EU it will give our own farmers a huge incentive to increase their capacity to supply us with much more home grown food, and to cut the food miles as they do so. It would be good to get back to the market share we had in 1970, and to think about restoring those orchards that were ripped out.

Andy Burnham to be given until midday tomorrow to agree to a deal with regards to lockdown otherwise the PM will intervene.

Burnham may as well eat a big dollop of humble pie otherwise a lockdown is coming whether he like it or not LOL.

Stupid man is putting lives at risk with his demands. As the death toll rises and the hospitals get ever fuller he is losing sympathy by the second.

"In London, footfall dropped just 2.3 per cent last week, less than many other regional cities across the UK.

Regional cities, excluding the capital, saw footfall collectively fall 5.7 per cent last week and are now down 47.9 per cent year on year."

Wales now in full lockdown, people told to stay indoors, non essential retail told to shut:

The market not fully digested the news yet.

In the meantime Bolton MP goes into hospital with coronavirus and Andy Burnham needs placing on the rack for putting greater Manchester residents at risk.

MARKS will probably fall again to new lows soon.

Wales poised for total circuit breaker lockdown

Bank of England warns the coronavirus is affecting the economy more than previously thought

Hamleys is struggling it has been affected by a loss of tourists in its shop in London and is set to axe a quarter of its workforce. Its also put on hold the refurbishment of its shop meaning knock on affect for construction/building work

Edinburgh Wool Mill owner Philip Day in race to thrash out a rescue deal which could mean closing down the EWM part of the business due to that part of the group being mid to late age group who are spending less.

Its uncertain what will happen to other parts of the business, Austin Reed and Yeager may be sold off but Yeager is loss making but a good brand. Day also owns Jane Norman, Ponden Mill, and Peackocks. According to the press he wants to buy back Peackocks which does surprise me as the market for that store is completive but Day evidently sees value in the brand.

Ponden Mill kind of stuff which includes sheets and towels is available in other outlets at completive prices so the outlook uncertain.

It wouldn't surprise me if Mike Ashley looks to but Austin Reed and Yeager for his House of Fraser stores. According to the press over the weekend Mike Ashley is bidding to buy Debenhams his previous attempts failed and he had to write off his investment.

Latest rise in Corona cases released 18th October (day before in brackets):

Positive cases 16,982 (16,171)

Patients in hospital 5,608 (5,608)

On ventilator 592 (592)

Admissions 924 (987)

Deaths 67 (150)

Some of the figures delayed hence no change and figures always lower at weekend due to delay in reporting.

Manchester hospitals on RED alert as Andy Burnham continues his stupid argument with the GOV over restrictions and wanting more money. He will have to cave in shortly, he is putting the public at risk.
