16/5/2006 12:31 | the wolf blass yellow label cab sauv 2003 is one of my favourites @ 475p a bottle at tesco (when buying six) but the offer is due to run out soon. I have never paid the 795p usual asking price. | snappy
16/5/2006 08:24 | Later on in the week (when I feel up to it) , I'll be putting the finest barolo (down from £12.99 to £8.99) up against the aglianaco for a mere £4.99 and one of my favourite cheap glugs to see if it's worth the extra. | bionicdog
16/5/2006 08:09 | I've had the Nobilo at it was just OK in my book. The Villa Maria knocks it's socks off if you can run to the extra. Failing that , the Matua valley is not bad , but not on offer. I notice that the Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cab was the first to run out , as this looked the only real bargain instore to me at a fiver. A lot of the rest was overpriced to start with. Don't worry though , I got enough of them. | bionicdog
15/5/2006 23:09 | Aye, the Berberana is top stuff.....have some more of those plus Nobilo NZ Sauv Blanc and Lagunilla Rioja on order. Very impressed with the quality at that price. Cheers. | jazza
15/5/2006 20:25 | bionicdog - actually I bought 30 bottles last week too. The deals at the mo seem sensationally good. Paid half price for most if not all of my wines this time - with free delivery too! Mostly Riojas(18), south african merlot (6) and a wolf blass cabernet (6). Of the 18 Riojas one box of 6 was a mixed box of Berberana Tempranillos - have had 2 of them and they are gr8 quality and I'm sure I only paid £4 a bottle for them! Superb! GLUG! 11/5/2006 16:19 | Thanks , I'll check it out at my local one. I haven't been there since storming out a couple of years back. What used to get me was that all the beer was more than it is at the corner shop , ie a fiver for four cans , except for an offer that you needed the stupid card for. I prefer to be ripped by Waitrose , as at least you feel like you are getting something for the extra money. | bionicdog
11/5/2006 13:08 | "Tasting" 36 bottles in a week is good going , even for me. | bionicdog
11/5/2006 12:57 | Bought 36 bottles from tesco.com last week. Rioja, Chablis, NZ Sauv Blanc, Chat Neuf Du Pape - all good stuff but will just buy the Rioja, Sauv Blanc again before end of the offers (23rd May). Bloke who delivered 'em said it was unbelievable how much wine the website was selling - the back of the wagon was full of wine (not just mine!) so I believe him. Not sure what this is doing to sales at the competition like Majestics???? J. | jazza
25/2/2006 14:38 | Australian Wine Club (sounds off-putting perhaps, but glad to know you)) Have some super Aussie reds called Rockford, ie, 2002 Rockford Basket Press Shiraz @£274.89 doz, and Rockford Rifle Range!! Cab Sauv @£197.89 (don't know where they get the 89p from). Lovely intense and complex. They will do anyones cellar a power of good, they have mine! :-) Something I like drinking almost as much and a fair bit cheaper is a Water Wheel Memsie, Bendigo @£79.99, heck of a 'nose' and dark in colour! I think they were recently taken over by Laithwaites, not 100% sure though. | rayrac
25/2/2006 13:09 | The Tesco Finest Aglianico is about the cheapest wine that I would dare to palm off onto someone. I think I'd be sleeping on the couch if I dared to go as low as £2.39. On the other hand , nothing ventured. I could always put another label on and pour mine from a decent bottle. I notice that Grange comes to under £80 a throw at the moment and the Bin 28 is £7.19. At Tesco Calais the Grange would be 147.5 Euros which is over a ton and the Bin 28 11.65 Euros , so they are losing money hand over fist on these. | bionicdog
24/2/2006 14:22 | Chile's Colchagua Valley Awarded Wine Enthusiast's 'Wine Region of the Year' for 2005 NEW YORK, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Wine Enthusiast named Chile's Colchagua Valley as the Wine Region of the Year. The December 15 issue recognized the ten recipients of the Wine Star Awards for 2005. Colchagua was recognized for the profound transformation of the valley over the past fifteen years. During this time, Colchagua Valley changed from a region of small orchards and meager vineyards to one with large, well-run wineries and innovative wine makers. According to Wine Enthusiast, "The results have been impressive, as Colchagua's bodegas have reeled in dozens of 90-plus scores and even more rock-solid, well-priced wines worthy of 'Best Buy' classification." Colchagua Valley is located about 90 miles south of Santiago, Chile's capital. The agricultural valley begins at the foothills of the Andes mountains and extends towards the Pacific Ocean, which both provide important cooling influences. The valley's various microclimates and soil types create an exceptional climate for cultivating the grapes that the region is known for. "We would like to congratulate all of the wineries in the Colchagua Valley. We are honored to have Wine Enthusiast recognize our efforts in the region," said Ricardo Letelier, Managing Director of Wines of Chile. "The growth in wine makers' understanding of the viticulture has led to a significant increase in premium wines in the region. We are extremely proud of the results." Colchagua Valley, along with the nine other recipients of the Wine Star Awards for 2005, was honored at a gala event on January 23, 2006 at the New York Public Library. Each award winner received a trophy for outstanding work in the ever-changing global wine industry. Wine Enthusiast added, "Chile has become a major player in the global wine market over the past decade, and within the country no region has distinguished itself as being more capable of producing world-class red wines than the Colchagua Valley, Wine Enthusiast's Wine Region of the Year for 2005." Wines of Chile will conduct a four-city tasting tour in Ft. Lauderdale, New York, San Francisco and Seattle from March 6-15. For more information on the tastings, please contact Wines of Chile, at 866-461-WINE or e-mail: . 24/2/2006 10:18 | Robert Parker really pulling out all the stops-this description is hilarious:o) Chapoutier Hermitage, Northern Rhone, Rhone, France Syrah (a dry red table wine) "An awesome effort, the 2003 Ermitage La Pavillon is produced from an old vineyard in Les Bessards. Tasting this wine is akin to a religious drinking experience. An endlessly complex, extraordinarily rich, complicated offering, it may last a century. There are 500 cases of this wine, which smells like acacia flowers intermixed with black currant liqueur, melted licorice, Chinese black tea, and incense. With supple tannin, an unctuous texture, and a massive finish, this is a legend in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2060+. As I have said so many times over the last 15 years, the top Chapoutier wines are meant for very long term drinking, and are not designed for immediate gratification. Everything Chapoutier is doing, from his bio-dynamically farmed vineyard to tiny yields, extended fermentations, indigenous yeasts, and no fining or filtration, is done to produce the essence of a vineyard and a vintage. His track record since 1989 and 1990 admirably proves that these are indeed remarkable wines made by a young genius who refuses to compromise. Michel Chapoutier has been misunderstood by some of his peers, and there is a lot of jealousy when someone this young is so incredibly talented, but it is an irrefutable fact that these are wines of singular greatness as well as longevity." 10/2/2006 06:40 | LONDON, February 10 /PRNewswire/ -- LONDON, February 10 /PRNewswire/ -- - With photo How much would you pay for your favourite bottle of wine? GBP 50? GBP 100? One wine connoisseur has just bought what is thought to be the most expensive bottle of white wine in the world at US$100,000 (GBP55,000): a 1787 vintage Sauternes from Château Yquem. Stephen Williams, Managing Director of London based Antique Wine Company who sourced and completed the deal, said: "We have been working for some time on this commission and the purchaser is a long standing customer of ours. Even though we regularly work on commissions to source rare wines this one has been particularly gratifying. "This is really a very rare wine and our client, a US based collector of fine wines, will treasure this prize to add to an already impressive collection." But at over 200 years old what will the wine taste like? "Château Yquem is a sweet wine made in Bordeaux from completely shrivelled up, late harvested grapes. It has the concentration that enables it to mature for many years, even centuries. Apart from the taste, the enjoyment of wine as old as this is a remarkably nostalgic experience. In 1787 when peasants in Bordeaux were picking these grapes, George Washington became the first President of the United States, the French Revolution began, George III was King of England and James Watt was developing the steam engine!" The valuable bottle was acquired by the Antique Wine Company from a private collector in France. Williams, who collected it in his private plane, will now fly to The United States to complete his mission by personally delivering the wine to his US client. When asked if this is rather a fuss over a bottle of wine Williams replied, "Not really, it might be the most expensive and pampered travelling companion I've ever had, but providing highly personal service is what our business is all about, and at GBP10,000 per glass I have to be sure that our client is left with a sweet taste in his mouth".
