20/12/2005 09:33 | bdog, not yet :-) Been sampling a few Barossa - will buy one if I get the chance but don't think I'll be popping into tesco before chrimbo... Bought a "Bullitt Bourbon" from Soho Wine as a present - damn tempted to open it myself :-) jl. | jl202
19/12/2005 15:10 | >> bionicdog the C du Pape at TSCO was ok 4 the price but u were right - not as good as expecting. fwiw Sainsburys have lindemans bin 65 @ £3.99 although is 2005 and not as good as (2003?) still good all round "party" wine for Xmas guests. ps if u do find the Grange at 2:1 then I will send the lorry. pps still think the best 2 value drinks out there are the Tesco bubbly around £15 and Jackson Estate from NZ. | ttg100
19/12/2005 14:48 | Did you try that horrible Tesco chablis? | bionicdog
16/12/2005 10:38 | Not really :o( I was most taken by Tesco's finest Aglianico Basilicata from last night's offerings. Mrsbdog won't believe me that it was under four quid. | bionicdog
16/12/2005 09:39 | 2 bottles a night?! Can you see before 11 the next morning??!! | jl202
15/12/2005 07:17 | Off-licence group Unwins facing administration - report LONDON (AFX) - Unwins, the off-licence chain acquired by DM Private Equity Ltd in March, appears to be on the brink of collapse after filing an intention to appoint administrators, according to a report. The application, filed in the High Court on Monday, gives Unwins until next Tuesday to find a buyer or to refinance, The Times reported. In September, sources told AFX News that Unwins was planning to shed a net 135 staff from its sales force of around 1,700, following the loss of a net 20 head office positions in April. paw/bam | grupo guitarlumber
14/12/2005 10:49 | All I can say on the subject is that the ordinary Banrock Station shiraz is not even recognisable as coming from that grape variety. Utter bilge. Had a bottle of Zilze Viognier 2004 from the Asda Australian section last night. It's quite pleasant and tastes fairly harmless , until you turn the bottle round and see that it's a 14.5% white. No wonder I've been feeling a bit odd. I'm really not sure that I can carry on "testing" a minimum of 2 bottles a night for much longer , just to make sure that we have some good 'uns for Xmas dinner. | bionicdog
14/12/2005 09:05 | English Bigblls - 12 Dec'05 - 16:52 - 2044 of 2050 Banrock Station "The Reserve" is "on offer" at Sainsburys at the moment, down to £3.99 supposedly from around £8. Can anyone tell me if this is a genuine offer or not? By the way, I bought a bottle of the red at the weekend and it was a very nice wine for £3.99, but wouldn't pay more than £5 or so for it. >>> Depends how you define "offer". Its probably not a bad price no. The reason they can offer a good price on their "offer" wines is because everyone buys them. The huge volume enables a price cut, where supermarket volumes are already high. What it means though is that it restricts choice and consumer power. By getting peeps to behave like lemmings the supermarkets only have to stock one wine a week; evryone drinks it, job done. It means that the genuine choice is simply not there. Most of the supermarkets have got rid of their wine tasters because they no longer need them. What it also means is that the wines will all tend towards mass appeal commercial tastes, i.e. the soft australian fruity red and medium chardonnay. It makes the wine boring and with little or no variety. But try and buy a wine that's not on offer and you get stung... As I said, if this can be shown to be anti-competitive or cartel like behaviour it could not only increase wine choice; but also nail the current barrage of "get one free" prices, which is doing the same thing for all supermarket products, not just wine,,, jl. | jl202
14/12/2005 09:00 | bionic, well - I'll have to buy a bottle too. Normally you can't get a petit chablis for a fiver! has to be served well chilled... Might pick up a bottle of the chateau-neuf also on at tesco at £6.50, which is unheard of even in frog. We'll see... Two other bottle I picked up from Au'Tesc were a Barossa Shiraz for £9 and a Penfolds Bin 28 for £9 as well I think. They're for presents but I'm a bit tempted to pop the cork myself... aha: it is my birthday this weekend... lets avoid wrapping them!!! | jl202
12/12/2005 17:43 | Grupo - in general, try some. The half price Chateau Neuf De Pape in Tesco's has now gone in shop and on-line within a couple of days. | isis
12/12/2005 17:37 | Just one more thing to add to the discussion , there may be some loss-leaders at this time of year to entice the punters in , but chances are there will be an empty space on the shelf by the time you get there. Unlike the bilge on the end of the aisle that you've never heard of before , but is still half price. They will have plenty of that left! | bionicdog
12/12/2005 17:26 | Where's that Wine Bar, Isis? France, Uk or Eygpt? | grupo guitarlumber
12/12/2005 16:55 | My local Tesco uses up nearly 2 whole aisles with wine - I doubt they would be filling this space up and only selling 10 lines of something. By comparison ten years ago the wine section was a fraction of this size - I think you only have to look at their profits to realise they are selling almost anything well. Majestic ans some off-licences must be desperately losing sales which are also much more expensive especially if you buy on-line. | isis

12/12/2005 16:48 | jl202 This was a genuine offer , I can only assume to clear the shelves of it and you must admit that it is cheap for the product in question. The wine has been reviewed in the papers etc. There are however other regular offers such as Hardy's Crest or Kumala Zenith , supposedly down from £7.99 to £3.99. Nobody has ever paid £7.99 and it isn't worth £3.99. Another one is Rosemount Estate down to a fiver , which is all it's worth , not the suggested asking price of 7 or 8 quid. In short , we should all know the price of "proper" wines and when they are really cheap. If you see a bottle of Grange buy one get one free let me know. | bionicdog
12/12/2005 15:20 | The Penfolds Bin 128 is also on offer at Majestic (and very nice it is too): | realcooltrader
12/12/2005 15:13 | ... if you could make an anticompetitive argument out of the above then you could perhaps kill the "get one free" bullsh@t spouted everywhere; 50% more free (but we marked the price up last week don't you know...) Hello advertising standards? jl. | jl202
11/12/2005 19:07 | Don't waste it on her! Give 'er some blossom hill for £3 LOL! | bionicdog |
