1) I'm pretty sure there won't be many NUM officials volunteering to work in the Marikana works office. So that's the end of the local dispute.
2) Facts not rumour:

Platinum rising and Rand falling against USD. Production and sales on budget for the year so far. New CEO, Ben Magara, starts work next month. Union issues look as though they will settle down (hopefully without further bloodshed). Good fundamentals for a recovery here, IMO. I've added in the last few weeks.
Shorters are running out of bad news and they're closing their positions - adding to further upward pressure on share price
If I'm wrong - Let's hear the downside argument!

You're not alone but there's not much to add. I'd read the following on ADVFN evening bullet:in "Platinum miner Lonmin was an outperformer for much of the session as negotiations continued with labour unions in South Africa. The stock was given a boost by Morgan Stanley, which upgraded its rating from 'equal weight' to 'overweight', saying that the stock appears attractively valued versus peers" but wasn't aware that they had put a price on it. Even if the share price gets there, I will still have a huge loss but I can't say I feel like adding.

Its a difficult sell - Companies recording good profits metal prices at very high levels. Lonmin need to get a deal sorted pre september and i do not think it is going to be an easy ride. Add in the other tensions in the are and it is a powder keg! Am short and will stay so over the next couple of months as any news that is likely to come out will be bad! Will exit at circa £2 - £2.20.

Apparently the gold miners are looking for a 60% pay rise!
Whatever happens it is going to get really ugly over the next few months.
I really do think that the S. African miners need to take a stand even if that means lost production, otherwise there will be no industry left in the not too distant future.

Interesting to hear what happens this afternoon.

MARIKANA - Platinum producer Lonmin had on Thursday denied that it had given into political pressure to keep the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on the premises despite it not being the majority.

The claims surfaced as thousands of miners in Marikana in the North West went on an unprotected strike on Monday.

They belong to rival union Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) which is the now the majority and are demanding that NUM leave the mine.

Lonmin's Sue Vey said their main priority is a peaceful resolution.

"It would appear at times that decisions are made which favour one or the other, but our goal is to have equal representation appropriate for unions based on their members."

While miners have returned to work their strike is not officially over until they are told by their leaders at another mass meeting scheduled for Thursday.

Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa will report back to his members after a meeting he had with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to ensure that the union is recognised as the majority union at Marikana.

A total of three people including a high ranking Amcu official have been killed during the weekend, which is believed to a have sparked the protest.

Angel - Doesn't read wuite so well if you read all the way through to the end- '

Recently, the union's North West regional organiser died in a hail of bullets.

Earlier today strikers hurled death threats at a police videographer.

Meanwhile, prior to Mathunjwa's address, four gunshots were heard inside the stadium.

It was believed the shots were fired into the air, although it was not immediately known who fired the shots or whether anyone was wounded.

The gunshots were heard while workers were filing into the stadium'
