Fair cop gov. 9th line of p239 should read "often less than a dozen". Thanks. Noted for second edition!

Overall I was pleased with how the production of the book came out (mainly the designer's work not mine). The charts are legible, the line drawings between the chapters make some sort of sense, etc.

Hugh had a name change. Not a missing chapter.

In your BOOK thread you link (now dead) to a sample chapter on Hugh. Did Hugh have his name changed, or is that a missing chapter?

I think it's best not to encourage Invisage with responses. This is not the first time he has posted (what he claims to be) the real name of an anonymous contributor to these boards.

A vicious specimen.

Take a look at this :

I agree with South Yorkshire with regard to Mike Burry.

However with regard to wanting to know more about WShak, Carmensfella and Stemis, at least one of them is a full chapter in the forthcoming book mentioned in the second post above.

The proprietor of this pub is also a full chapter in the book!!

Honeywood is Guy Thomas fwiw

Why do you think Paulyilot is in the book?

I do know Paul. He has a quite distinctive biography and personality, nothing like anyone in the book.

I'm an actuary - I understand all this stuff, and I find it interesting. But most readers wouldn't, so there's a limit to feasible precision in a general interest book.

Agreed 100% plus 'millions on the stock markets' sounds cool. :O)

Good luck with the book. :O)

Ps If you are ever in Cork, Ireland give me a shout through the ShareLadder.com website and I'll be happy to show you around if time permits.

Yes I know. But what has that got to do with the people in the book?

It would be interesting to do a follow up in five or ten years to see if these individuals are just survivors rather than have a formula that works.

Yes. But I have known some of them for several years, and they have stayed successful long after I first identified them as exceptional investors.

imo - that should be the real test of outperformance. ie comparative to an index.

There are some relative performance figures in the book, see particularly chapter 4 (John Lee) and chapter 5 (Sushil).

In the other chapters it's mainly compound growth rates over long periods. These rates are generally high enough so as to be obviously in excess of any market index.

But if you want anything other than very approximate figures, the whole issue of performance measurement becomes very, very tricky. "Comparative to an index" - is that a price index, or a total return index? How do you allow for income tax? Capital gains tax? New money? Withdrawals? Are you calculating money-weighted rates of return, or time-weighted rates of return?

Have a look at shareladder.com - value based portfolio up 46.5% in 1 year and 2 weeks. No gimmicks, just plain value investing based on my picks. I personally out perform the index by over 40% on average most years ( apart from 2008 - don't ask ). Website still shows 42% gain achieved in 12 months but I'll get the hurdy gurdy to change that.

imo - that should be the real test of outperformance. ie comparative to an index. You can't really compare Joe Blogg starting with GBP 700K made a million in the markets over a period of 10 years vs Matt Brick who started with say GBP 10K but made a 300% gain during the same time. Obviously to readers it sounds more exciting.

Anyhow I will read the book at some point and good luck with it.

Trade2Win review:

"The more I read this book the more it fascinates me and in that respect it seems to be like the classics of Livermore, Wizards, Loeb -- every time you read it another little gem of information or idea becomes apparent."
