You seem to be the man to ask. I have been looking at software packages. Updata is one that i have been looking at. If this is a bad program, please just tell me, what is the best program to use? Ease of use is a major factor.

thanks

Andy,

Superb re: bargain price :-). I am after an extra copy of "Charters on Charting" by David Charters. I have a pre-order ( i.e. 'I am a waiting buyer' ) on amazon but nobody is forthcoming. There must be one person in the world that has a copy they don't want. I've even offered the RRP for it as it's out of print now.

Rather annoyingly I did locate a copy which I bought from the US, but it got lost in the post ( arrghhhh).

Cheers

2Deano,

What a coincidence!
As my CC's are in the car, I went onto Amazon, where I have an account, and managed to buy a SECOND HAND (as new condition) "more profit form your PC" for £3 + £3 postage!

I wasn't aware Amazon did 2nd hand books until now.

I checked for the 1996 "Profit from your PC", and they didn't have one, but I pre-ordered any 2nd hand editions they may come by, and they ask you to specify a condition, a maximum price you will pay, and a maximum waiting period, of either 4,8, or 12 weeks.

This service looks good to me, (I'm actually surprised there isn't a 2nd hand books for sale thread on ADVFN) and seems to be what you may be looking for.

Regards,

Andy.

2Deano,

Yes, thank you very much!
Amazon don't stock it, so i'll try Barnes and Noble.

Count,

I've heard this book has been highly spoken of, what do you know about David Linton? I'm not aware of the "Updata" story.

Andy.keen@totalise.co.uk if you prefer offline.

Thanks again, and regards,

Andy.

There was a book recommended, that had a title similar to "Making Money With Your PC, or "Trading With Your PC". this was a first edition, and a second edition has now been released.

The first edition was a sellout, and this is the book I want.

Does anyone recognise the title I'm trying to find?

TIA,

Andy.

Indieman - realised that, but they got well off topic, although the TA books one is pretty good.

Liar's Poker is by Michael Lewis.

Did you realise that much of the info here duplicates an existing BOOK thread?

Have not read Murphy's TA book which I think (from reviews and others comments) is better but Schwager does a TA book which aint to bad. "Getting started in Technical Analysis" which I bought after reading "Market Wizards"

Van K Tharp - best read so far for me. Best read after taking a large loss from experience :-(

I am looking into getting some new books, and someone has mentioned one that i would like to purchase, but have forgotten the title. It is something like Hope Fear Greed, but can't remember the order. Knowing my luck, it is probably out of print now..

Haven't read Liars Poker but was thinking of buying it as a page turner.

Emphatically agree on ROASO by Lefevre ( my favourite book )and the Market Wizard books by Schwager.

Also like:

Where Are The Customers Yachts by Fred Sched Jr.

Candlestick charting by Steve Nison.

Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets by J Murphy.

The ascending triangle pattern is apparently one of the most reliable and features in Bulkowski's top ten patterns. A few years ago I began trading triangles seriously and keeping detailed records. I was expecting to gain a lot from this book because Bulkowski has trawled through hundreds of shares and analysed each type of pattern. I should like to make a flow chart, starting with the ascending triangle, based on the stages of price development. Steps in the chart might for instance be: Rising prior price and established four points of contact/the quarters of the triangle/premature breakouts(say 3)/actual breakout(3=up,down,along)/false signal, failure, successful conclusion. Movement through the chart would of course not necessarily be in that order, for example: triangle not established until 2nd quarter, premature breakout(s), back to 2nd quarter, breakout, false signal, 3rd quarter and so on, or in a simple case: 1st quarter,2nd quarter, upside breakout, conclusion.
The problem with the book is either that it is more sloppy than it appears or that Bulkowski has been so engrossed in the writing that he has ignored the essentials like carefully defining key words. What EXACTLY is a premature breakout as against a failure as against a failed signal as against a throwback or pullback. Many times in the text he defines some of these in a chatty way and at the back of the book are definitions which are not very explicit. I am not sure whether the confusion is all of Bulkowski's or partly my own. Any clarification from others would be welcome.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CHART PATTERNS Thomas N Bulkowski 2000 Wiley

This thread is for discussion of the above book, referred to by Indieman in the Book Recommendations thread (BOOK). We both have reservations about Bulkowski's method and the presentation of statistics which is proving difficult to follow. At present we do not feel able to recommend the book in spite of the very detailed analysis of the broad range of patterns that it covers.
Observations on it or help in understanding the method will be welcome.
