oliver isnt really in contention unless something happens to kevan mealamu. He cant throw into the lineout, which is why he hasnt been in the team over the last couple of years.

Fitzpatrick might be right about that. 45 players means that the usual weariness wont affect the midweek side i reckon. lots of rotation and some of them arent that bad players either ;-). Seems to me that every kiwi went to school with, or lived next door to, an all black at some point. mine was richard lowe. he is right in that the lions wont win a test kearnsey, i would have money on that myself.

still reckon steven jones should get the nod, wilkinson will be a marked man.

Was talking to this kiwi last night who reckons he knows Sean Fitzpatrick
quite well. He said SF predicts that the Lions will win 70% of the mid-week/
non test games but that they will not win any test matches on this tour.

Brave words Seanie, lets see what happens, eh?

Richie McCaw might be out if his headaches dont stop.

"two of the heaviest suspensions in the Super 12 recently were meted out to players who stamped on McCaw's head at the bottom of a ruck. One of them brought a six-week holiday for Ali Williams, the All Blacks lock and one of McCaw's best mates."

Not that i know of crammy.

There will be the trials that they have every season. Shadow vs likely.

Maybe a game against one of the islands, but apart from that i doubt they have any lined up.

crammy - good afternoon. Didnt quite have the legs on his last kick though did he. Long may that continue!

I think its cynical to suggest that corry intentionally elbowed hill in the face, as you mention above he recently dislocated it and was, imho, just cushioning the blow (that he would have got from the ground).

NZ teams had a pretty good weekend on the super12. Lots of competition for places I reckon.

aye shano,

his elbow is already dislocated anyway - maybe he did it to move it back into place

crammy, liked the statement in the Metro this morning:
"[Corry] saw red after elbowing Lions colleague Hill in the face...."

Poor Corry, Hill's face must have hurt his elbow something wicked. :-)

Presumably they mean he saw the red card, rather than saw the red mist descend, but I like reading it the other way!

wal

just for you - little jonny came through unscathed. "best 40 mins by any english fly half this season".

a quote from the ever neutral rob anrew who presumably has mortgaged his house and bet on jonny being on the plane for nz.

did anybody notice martin corry's novel way for bonding with a fellow lion competing for your place when sarries played leicester? bodes well for team spirit. nice to see mr hill back and playing well though

shano - seems carter had a solid season for canty, but havent really kept up with npc/super12 for last 18 months or so.

Never liked carlos, too airy fairy for me. And Mehrts is too old no?

how many BoP players in contention?

Thanks Shano.

I went to Tauranga too; a much more pleasurable experience than Rotorua!!

Mike,
They'd play a few club games in Rotorua, and maybe one or two Bay games, but the majority of their games are elsewhere. Check out for their 2004 fixtures. There's only one NPC game in Rotorua, most of them are in Tauranga. And I can guarantee that there ain't such a smell in Tauranga!

Wal, any ideas on the AB's first five? Spencer? Merhtens? Carter?

I think it ludicrous that wilkinson is even being considered for the lions team.

he can kick, so can steven jones. but jones has played all season, and isnt scared of a tackle. or likely to hurt his shoulder picking up his kitbag.

overhyped i reckon.

I didn't know that; but won't they be used to playing at the home ground ?

well today is big day because little jonny makes his comeback match for newcastle falcons. the impression i get is that if he can run and catch then woodward will pick him to tour. not entirely sure about woodwards methods on this one as i dont believe for a minute that the other fly halves are not slightly peeved about jw getting special treatment.

on the flip side, if odriscoll was in the same position (long lay off etc) and there was a chance of him being fit i would take him and hope he would be fit.

wilkinson and odriscoll are the only two lions players who i would guarantee a place in a world xv so i think you take the chance because they are big match players who are world class.

and if jw does go then we can stick hodgson on a plane home to prevent the frightening possibility he might play in the tests

Not too sure about that, Mike, if you're meaning they'll cope with the sulphur better. The Bay are a decent enough squad, but most of them are from Tauranga / Te Puke / Whakatane, all on the coast.
