25/6/2020 11:45 | Woodhawk - no real significance with regards to 3 year timescale, I just thought it was a reasonable period to judge performance. The 2.08% return over 3 years includes dividend payments. Over 5 years total return is 12.45% and over a 1 year period is -13.6%. So, all in all, over the last 5 years the data tells me that this hasn't been a particularly good investment for me. In fact pretty much all my individual holdings haven't got anywhere near the returns I've seen from my fund (OEICs) holdings. | zac0_4
25/6/2020 11:41 | I don’t have the time for trading today, but in my retirement there is a certain attraction and entertainment. But as usual, don’t invest anything you cannot afford to lose or you can sit long enough on paper losses. LGEN have shown good pedigree so far in this crisis and the August update will give us another barometer reading on how business is sustained in this recession. The job market will be dire into next year and this in itself will put pressure on all businesses performance and revenues. Market is shrinking as per GDP so need good companies like LGEN that reward SH also in difficult times. I will continue to drip feed into LGEN during year | tornado12
25/6/2020 11:11 | The best way of deciding on your approach to shareholding is to look at the stats, or read the warnings cfd/sb providers must provide to prospective traders. Something like '77% of pis who open an account with us lose money'. It's obvious really - it's a closed loop so winners are balanced by losers plus there's cash taken out of the system in charges. Pis are up against professional city 18yo who nevertheless have the edge with technology and inside info (nah, scrub that, it's illegal) and are trading with opm. Plus there are sophisticated bots which probably have software which gives them the edge. On advfn, we are extremely lucky to only have only the other 23%. Nothing is infallible, you can lose all your cash in ftse100 companies, it's just very unlikely compared to losing most of it trading in and out. And also, trading in and out of small companies you are only doing small bets due to liquidity problems. I would imagine the successful advfn traders as they all are, are talking about fifty or a hundred quid profit now and again. If people want to post their trades, then they should post every trade, not just the winners, then we'd see where the 77% comes from. Even losing traders have 49% winning trades - but that's all it takes, just like a roulette wheel keeps every monte carlo resident well preened. | pierre oreilly
25/6/2020 07:58 | I have been recycling L and G shares, they go up and down. This is a solid company. | rs34
25/6/2020 02:20 | zac0_4, Hindsight is a wonderful thing... but if you buy tomorrow, or the next day, how much will you gain over the next 3 years? And how much might your current 2% gain be by then? And what about the dividends you're still collecting? Ah, so many possibilities!! What's the significance of '3 years' anyway? | woodhawk
24/6/2020 23:32 | This market downturn has made me question what works for me and what doesn't. My investment strategy is simply buy and hold. I've always considered L&G to be one of my better holdings. I'm beginning to rethink. If you'd have bought this 3 years ago, as of today, you'd be sitting on a 2% gain!! It's making me think. | zac0_4
24/6/2020 09:50 | Lol your statement is true in most cases! LGEN has been very good for me - bought in all the way up to 200p from 146, sold out in the 240s and now riding it down.I'm not gloating it's just the fact that no one here accepted the fact that it would ever go back below the 220s | itsnotmeitsy0u
24/6/2020 09:43 | Is anyone concerned about the drop in value, and income from, the retail park/shopping centre holdings of companies like LGEN? If only a third of the rental income is being collected what's the impact on paying annuities/pensions and consequently on the company's share price? Are we seeing some of that worry hurting the price now? CD | cambridgedon
24/6/2020 09:37 | itsme, I always find that those so very keen to let everyone know they're in profit (albeit with no proof or any other evidence except their own words) do so because it's such a rare and novel event for them. | pierre oreilly
24/6/2020 09:22 | Back to late 190p area imoMy short from the 240's doing well | itsnotmeitsy0u
