There's now talk of the Toshiba sealed nuke generatord being a viable alternative if they get regulatory approval rushed through. Small power output but can be distributed around current generators and apparently virtually bombproof.

Perhaps it was this. Still, they will have revised their standards long before Rossing South starts producing.

China suspended approval on Wednesday of 28 planned nuclear power plants while it revised safety standards, making the surprise announcement after Premier Wen Jiabao met with top advisers to discuss Japan's nuclear crisis.

Gnevans....Been away for a couple of days....missed my daily dosage of U308....The proposed uranium power plants around the world are now too far committed for a disaster in one country to cause abandonment in any great way...Chernobyl was much greater and the world recovered.....

Politicians are looking at the ratings and future elections...France is the most committed european country to nuclear power... its economy would be in meltdown (sic) if they turned......

Patence is a virtue ....wish I had some.....

yes I sold KAH and I will probably regret it - KAH outperforming other U stocks. See GCL thread

Comforting noises from the Chinese regarding nuclear policy overnight. Words to the effect of "we will learn from the Japanese experience to improve our progamme and make it Tsunami-proof" reported on Radio 4 this morning.

Contrasts starkly with the ludicrous over-reaction of Angela Merkel in shutting down all Germany's older reactors. Let alone the Frogs evacuating their citizens from Japan. What wimps. I've been buying back into Japan overnight (HSBC Japan index fund at 0.2%amc pa seems as good a way as any at times like this).

KAH share price reaction this morning seems to bear all this out. Those pi's who sold will regret it!

It's all part of China's new Five Year Plan to continue with clean energy and reduction in emissions...

China currently have 50 reactors planned, with a further 110 reactors proposed:

Good read taken from HotCopper.

If this was used in the news rather than the scaremongery, then im sure the share price would surge the other way.

Marben, Tebbin, thoughts?

I am told (opinion) that the chinese will be unlikely to pull the plug and will in all likelihood proceed as this is their long term strategy.

The Japanese Reactor is 40 years old and in terms of safety is compared to newer reactors is like comparing a ford pinto (try wikipedia) to a ford focus.

Anyway fingers crossed that this blows over for all concerned not least the Japanese.

Hi all,

Perhaps a bit counter-intuitive, but a fall in uranium price could arguably work to KAH's advantage by knocking out higher-cost alternative / competing suppliers.....

gnevans, agreed. I would imagine the Chinese have a far more pragmatic view of events in Japan than most of the investment world seems to.

edit, it might possibly affect Itochu's position, though.

With 500mlbs u3o8 in the ground, low cost open-cast mining, several kms of licence as yet unexplored and new discoveries not yet included in the total figure, even a fall of 30% in the u3o8 price would still see KAH/Husab undervalued at 290p in my opinion.

If the Chinese come back with a revised offer, which would be naked opportunism, the chances of Rio and/or someone else joining battle will be increased IMV. When Rossing South is producing these jitters will have long since calmed. It may be that new power stations are designed with even more layers of security, but there will still be new power stations.

I see Bloomberg are forecasting a 25-30% drop in uranium price, so I guess the share price expects the chinese may come back with a revised offer once they've done due diligence.

Only had a small holding from Jan at 260p. Topped up a lot more at 232p about 10 mins ago. Nobody can really tell how far this will fall, but in 3 weeks time, you'd have thought it would have been north of the current price.
