12/5/2008 13:02 | Blimey PP, I have always had an interest in ancient history and beliefs, and the capabilities and understandings of these cultures never cease to amaze me. However for some reason we do tend to give them a supernatural ability to read the world that has escaped modern generations, and extrapolate from their technical expertise beliefs that otherwise we would dismiss. So the Mayans were astronomers whose abilities seem to outweigh what was technically achievable at that time. Why should that capability be ascribed some mystical value that they could attribute to the future of mankind? Why are we prepared to accept this part of their belief system whilst turning are back on other aspects that seem less agreeable to today's generation (such as cannabilism)? Still I agree it is an interesting field and certainly should make the London Olympics more interesting! | leighbarton | |
