Claimed periodicity of mass extinctions
In 1984 paleontologists David Raup and Jack Sepkoski published a paper claiming that they had identified a statistical periodicity in extinction rates over the last 250 million years using various forms of time series analysis.[1] They focused on the extinction intensity of fossil families of marine vertebrates, invertebrates, and protozoans, identifying 12 extinction events over the time period in question. The average time interval between extinction events was determined as 26 million years. At the time, two of the identified extinction events (Cretaceous-Tertiary and Late Eocene) could be shown to coincide with large impact events. Although Raup and Sepkoski could not identify the cause of their supposed periodicity, they suggested that there might be a non-terrestrial connection. The challenge to propose a mechanism was quickly addressed by several teams of astronomers.

[edit] Development of the Nemesis hypotheses
Two teams of astronomers, Whitmire and Jackson, and Davis, Hut and Muller, independently published a similar hypothesis to explain Raup and Sepkoski's supposed extinction periodicity in the same issue of the journal Nature.[2][3] This hypothesis proposes that the sun may have an as yet undetected companion star in a highly elliptical orbit that periodically disturbs comets in the Oort cloud, causing a large increase in the number of comets visiting the inner solar system with a consequential increase in impact events on Earth. This became known as the Nemesis (Death Star) hypothesis.

If it does exist, the exact nature of Nemesis is uncertain. Richard A. Muller suggests that the most likely object is a red dwarf with magnitude between 7 and 12,[4] while Daniel P. Whitmire and Albert A. Jackson argue for a brown dwarf. If a red dwarf, it would undoubtedly already exist in star catalogs, but its true nature would only be detectable by measuring its parallax; due to orbiting the Sun it would have a very low proper motion and would escape detection by proper motion surveys that have found stars like the 9th magnitude Barnard's star.

The last major extinction event was about 5 million years ago, so Muller posits that Nemesis is likely 1-1.5 light years away at present, and even has ideas of what area of the sky it might be in (supported by Yarris, 1987), near Hydra, based on a hypothetical orbit derived from original apogees of a number of atypical long-period comets that describe an orbital arc meeting the specifications of Muller's hypothesis.

[edit] Looking for Nemesis
If Nemesis exists, it may be detected by the planned Pan-STARRS or LSST astronomical surveys, or similar future projects. If Nemesis is a brown dwarf, as proposed by Dr. Dan Whitmire and Albert A. Jackson IV, then the upcoming WISE mission (scheduled for June 2009) should easily find it.

One of the theories :

So, lets start with one of the theories. These are purely that, theories and opinions. There is loads of information, disinformation, hoaxes, deliberate hoaxes designed to mislead, designed to ridicule out there........so be open minded and consider the theory.

Our solar system contains a "brown dwarf" star. Most systems observed are all "binary star" systems. This means they have 2 stars. To have just 1 star, as we are led to believe in our case is not in the majority lets say. A "brown dwarf" star is very difficult to see as they are surrounded in dust clounds. The only way to see it is through infra red telescopes until its nearly on top of you.

The theory goes that this "brown dwarf" star is on a highly eliptical orbit and is now on its return to pass very close to Earth. Each time it does so the energy forces given out destroys nearly everything on planet earth, and so this is what has destroyed everything in the past before, and so it will again.

It is said the effects of it are already being felt, with the global warning (or global cooling depending where you live as many places not in Europe are now colder than they ever were before). The increase in "super" storms, "super" hurricanes, and other "super weather systems is attributed to the influences in the solar system caused by the return of this brown dwarf star for a pass through our planetary system.

It is the theory that this "brown dwarf" is now inside the Kuiper Belt and heading our way, and will become visible to all and sundry by 2010.

The rumour has it that the Sptizer telescope confirmed it in 1983, and since that time preparations are being made for its impending return (eg doomsday vaults, the ongoing Space Centre due for completion 2010) etc...

Spitzer Space Telescope :

Kuiper Belt :

There are lots of variations on this theme, Planet "X", Planet Nibaru, etc.. there are themes that this is the "return of the anti-christ", your "666", the "destroyer" is returning - all based upon the return of a "heavenly body".........

So could it be we do live in a binary star system ? Is their a "brown dwarf" sister to our sun ?

Is it going to swing its way through our neighborhood in 2012 and cause great change ?

Well, its one theory out there in the "ether" to discuss.

So, without a doubt there are some strange anomalies in our past that have leaked out and become known. There is no answer to them based on "what the world understands", however the fact is there are lots of things from the ancient world which could explain many things in the not so ancient.

The greatest sadness on Earth must be the damage that religion and religious zealots have done to the history of mankind. They have over and over again tried to hide, destroy and manipulate historic events to "prove" themselves and to save themselves from exposure as being "lies". Many times armies have marched with religion as their cause, they have destroyed the written histories of many cultures as they pre-date the supposed "religions" coming into being.

The Nazca Lines are another source of intrigue. There are impossible to see in their form from the ground (full stop).

They were not known about until airplanes started flying over the area and passengers and pilots reported strange lines on the ground.

So who made these lines that are only able to be appreciated from the sky ?

Its another of those mysteries of time.

On Google Earth you can view them by searching for "Changuilla" and they are just to the South-East of there. Take a good look around and at the photo's, the markings close up, the animal pictures etc...

If you search for "Nazca Lines" it sends you to the wrong place........... so search for "Changuilla" and then go to it, its in Peru.

Is the concept of an airplane limited to Egypt? That doesn't seem to be the case. Gold trinkets were found in an area covering Central America and coastal areas of South America, estimated to belong to a period between 500 and 800 CE, but since they are made from gold, accurate dating is impossible and based essentially on stratigraphy which may be deceptive. However, we can safely say that these gold objects are more than 1000 years old.

Another sidestep, given the comment above about "ancient civilisations knowledge" is to go into the unexplained (and often ridiculed - why ? well, you should know why) artifacts of the "ancient" world.

Today batteries can be found in any grocery, drug, convenience and department store you come across. Well, here's a battery that's 2,000 years old! Known as the Baghdad Battery, this curiosity was found in the ruins of a Parthian village believed to date back to between 248 B.C. and 226 A.D. The device consists of a 5-1/2-inch high clay vessel inside of which was a copper cylinder held in place by asphalt, and inside of that was an oxidized iron rod. Experts who examined it concluded that the device needed only to be filled with an acid or alkaline liquid to produce an electric charge. It is believed that this ancient battery might have been used for electroplating objects with gold. If so, how was this technology lost... and the battery not rediscovered for another 1,800 years?

The Mayan Long Count Calendar starts at :

0.0.0.0.0 (Gregorian this is 8th Nov 3114 BC)

It runs to 13.0.0.0 (Gregorian this is 21st Dec 2012 AD)

This is what is termed as the "Great Cycle".

Some people believe the Mayans did not record time after 13.0.0.0 (they call it "end of times") as it rolls over to 0.0.0.0 again and begins another great cycle.

Others of course say that this date is a major transformation date for planet earth.

What should be recognised is that the start date being circa 3000BC is where suddenly traces of present day human life starts to be recorded.

Science has still never found the "missing link" that they so desire to prove evolution to be correct, as in they have never found the skeletal remains of human evolution.......present day human form suddenly appears circa 3000BC, and there remains no "evolution" proof from before that to prehistoric form.

As far as science says, humans went through evolution to present day type some time before 3000BC, but we have not got any proof to back up that theory, and it remains pure theory.

Azuli, the evidence is there.

The Mayan structures left are remarkable in their ability to mark the passage of time. They even take into account the earths "wobble" which scientists did not know anything about until centuries later.

The Mayan Long Count calendar is highly accurate, however it only counts time until Dec 21st 2012, at which point they state it is the "end of times".

So the worlds most accurate calendar, made thousands of years ago, points to a specific date in time as a "major change". From what to what ? Thats the question.

Its ok to not understand, that is sadly a change thats happening in the world now, people are focused on material wealth, their own benefits and sod everything else.

These people have no desire to understand anything about our past, our present or our future, they are devoid of anything else apart from the need to "look after number one".

Another little fact is that the Space Shuttle ends its service life in 2010.

From 2011 NASA have no way of launching humans into space, the next potential time will be 2015 maybe, with the "Aries V" series of rockets.

Some people ask the question that in fact, are funds, capability and the whole resource being targeted into "undisclosed" projects from late 2010 onwards ?

Again, its just periphery stuff, but again, quite strange timescales that the NASA machine should be "not doing much" from late 2010 onwards......or is it ?

A discussion thread for the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, which says that Dec 21st 2012 is the "end of times" and a move into a "new time", a "new level" of consciousness.

What the hell is this thread about? I've read the header about 3 times now and I still don't get it. "Time", "calenders" and "dates" are all man-made constructs which attempt to rationalise and make sense of the world we live in - is there anything more ultimately meaningless than a statement/phrase (for want of a much better descriptive) such as (e.g.) "Dec 21st 2012" - ???

The world was around long before we ever emerged from the primordial soup & began trying to make sense of it all within our own limited intellectual capacity! FFS, our current method of marking the passage of time on an annual basis is based upon the supposed existence & teachings of some weird street magician from circa 2000 years ago!! I despair, I really do. Ignorance and superstition has so much to answer for.

Some questions have been raised over "Google Sky" as well. Given that the Sky cannot hold anything that the military or NSA would deem "secret" then why are certain area's of Google Sky blocked out ? What is there that we should not be looking at ? I do not know.

Go to Google Sky (Google Earth and "Switch to Sky" under the "View" tab) and put in the following coordinates -6.01931,-91.5903 into "Search the Sky" and click search.

You will see this :

So what was in that block that "someone" deemed was not for "public viewing" ? There are a few such "blacked out blocks" in Google Sky. As we know from Google Earth, certain features are blocked out or camouflaged as they are deemed to come under "National Security"

The "something is happening" brigade also point to the following news, that governments of the world are preparing for something, perhaps they do not even know exactly what it will be. Why go to the costs and effort in order to preserve all the worlds seeds in a "catastrophic event" proof arctic bunker in 2008 ?

'Doomsday' seeds arrive in Norway

By Mark Kinver

Science and nature reporter, BBC News

The first seeds to arrive in Norway had travelled from Nigeria

The first consignment of seeds bound for the "doomsday vault" on Svalbard has arrived in Norway.

Twenty-one boxes containing 7,000 seed samples from 36 African nations were sent by the Nigeria-based International Institute of Tropical Agriculture.

The final leg of the journey will take the seeds to the remote Arctic Island.

The vault is intended to act as insurance so that food production can be restarted anywhere on Earth after a regional or global catastrophe.

Built deep inside a mountain, the structure will eventually house a vast collection of seeds; safeguarding world crops against possible future disasters including nuclear wars and dangerous climate change.

The temperature inside the Svalbard Global Seed Vault will drop to -18C (0F) in order to preserve the seeds.

The Norwegian government is paying the $9m (£4.5m) construction costs of the vault, which will have enough space to house 4.5 million seed samples.

The seeds, weighing 330kg (730lb), are made up of varieties of domesticated and wild cowpea, maize, soybean and bambara groundnut.

"The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture genebank houses the world's largest collection of cowpeas, with over 15,000 unique varieties from 88 countries around the world," said Dr Dominique Dumet, the institute's genebank manager.

During January, other national seed banks supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) began packing and shipping duplicate collections that will be stored at Svalbard.

These included collections from Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines and Syria.

Collectively, CGIAR centres maintain 600,000 plant varieties in crop genebanks in a global effort to conserve agricultural biodiversity.

The collection and maintenance of the seeds is being co-ordinated by the Global Crop Diversity Trust, which has responsibility of ensuring the "conservation of crop diversity in perpetuity".

"The seed vault is the perfect place for keeping seeds safe for centuries," said Cary Fowler, the Trust's executive director.

"At these temperatures, seeds for important crops like wheat, barley and peas can last for up to 1,000 years."

The seed vault has been built 120m (390ft) inside a mountain on Spitsbergen, one of four islands that make up Svalbard.

The site, roughly 1,000km (600 miles) north of mainland Norway, was chosen as the location for the vault because it was very remote and it also offered the level of stability required for the long-term project.

The vault is scheduled to be formally opened on 26 February.

If some cataclysmic event was coming our way, would the powers that rule the world let the people know ?

Well, the answer to that would be certainly not, if you tell people about it, you will go through years of anarchy, as nobody will care as we all could die.

Why should anyone worry about law and rule and order, when faced with certain death, or even the potential for death through a massive event.

So thats one up to the argument it could potentially happen, simply, as we would never be told until its impossible to hide anymore - thats plain common sense.
