Thanks for the commentary, LBO. Are you a holder, buyer, shorter - or just an interested observer? ;)

Now even John Lewis feels the consumer spending squeeze

Retail sales grew by 0.2 per cent last month after a 1 per cent drop in February. Sales volumes are at about the same level they were in December before the rise in sales tax. Economists had expected a 0.5 per cent drop in volumes.

The weak sales growth points to subdued consumer confidence, although the fact that sales have not fallen back significantly following the 2.5 percentage point rise in tax rates suggests that they are not excessively fragile.

Sales in grocers and supermarkets rose relatively quickly over the month but sales of textiles, shoes and clothes and of household goods fell back.

Underlying trends in the clothing market are challenging, I agree. JQV will definitely be affected.

But from my own digging over the past 2-3 months, Jacques Vert brand doing very well - although the others (precis petite, planet, and wiindsmoor) are treading along - with precis petite especially struggling. Easter/wedding weekend will mean parties = dresses to be bought, and will continue if the good weather persists throughout summer. Cold weather earlier this year no doubt helped to sell some more coats than usual.

All IMO and untested research - but I'm looking to see:
- Rev/margins upside over the last few months, Jacques Vert brand doing well
- Cautious outlook, based on commodity prices and consumer spending

I still think the shares are cheap - but I don't think there is upside to the share price past 25p.

Obviously there's a copyright issue but I think it should be OK to post a small summary snippet:-

Midas verdict: Jacques Vert shares are 17p at which level they could be a rewarding investment. The next few months may be tough for retailers but Jacques Vert is still expected to increase sales and profits. Once economic recovery kicks in, the group should benefit further. Buy and hold.

If you notice the time of the trades is exactly the same in each case of the 1 mlns to the second ...... so it may just be an Investment house switching funds. Hope that is not the case and something more interesting is behind it all.....

Those trades are more than the rsult of an IC tip, imo. Something cooking here, I think. Not so surprising - this has to be one of the most undervalued retailers around.
