02/9/2009 19:09 | Berlin - The German government's 5 billion-euro (7.1 billion dollar) scheme aimed at encouraging car owners to update to new models ran out of money Wednesday. Set up about eight months ago, the German version of "cash for clunkers" has helped to shield Germany's key auto industry from the fallout from the global recession by resulting in a big boost to car sales. Since its launch about 2 million car buyers have profited from the scheme, which was aimed at encouraging car owners to trade in their old autos and replace them with models offering more environmental features. "There are no more funds available for the environment bonus plan," said a notice on the website of the government agency charged with administrating the scheme. "The online registration (for the scheme) is closed." Oh dear. We might see manufacturers start to destock very quickly now. | gyau | |
