perhaps the weak oil price gives a bidder more confidence to do the deal

later in Q1. but perhaps they wont be able to wait to do this deal. shouldnt have any problems disposing of Organon

Akzo Nobel, a Dutch company, has had its hands tied with the task of demerging Organon, its pharmaceutical business, but it has made plain its ambition to expand in coatings. The Organon transaction should be completed in the first quarter of 2007, allowing Akzo to focus on developing its coatings business, which boasts Crown, the market-leading consumer brand, as well as important positions in industrial and marine coatings.

telegraph...

On the subject of takeover speculation, ICI rose 9p to 461p as hopes that the chemicals company could be snapped up by Dutch-based Akzo Nobel refused to die down. Collins Stewart also repeated its buy rating on the shares, noting that the US housing market is stabilising, and that US paints account for about 17pc of ICI's group sales.

FT...

ICI moved ahead 2 per cent to 461¼p, after being singled out by several brokers as a likely takeover target in 2007. Cazenove noted that Dutch rival Akzo Nobel will have the firepower to bid after the demerger of its pharmaceuticals business, which is expected early in 2007.

perhaps akzo would have to pay 630 is the share price keeps moving like this

I know it's no longer the same animal, but at the time of the split into ICI and Zeneca, the share price of the "New" ICI was 630p.

That had been chased up by the take over proposal of Hanson.

It would be instructive to know what the final dividend will be, when it is announced. A major increase would also be share price enhancing, as the yield is currently a miserable 1.8%. There are more factors in play here than just a premium over the current share price

Imperial Chemical In Akzo Nobel set to make ICI takeover bid - report

LONDON (AFX) - Imperial Chemical Industries PLC could be the subject of a
takeover bid by Dutch coatings business Akzo Nobel next year, according a report
in The Times.
Akzo Nobel is likely to move in on the British group in the first quarter of
2007 after it has demerged its pharmaceutical business - Organon - the report
said.
The Times report said a takeover of ICI would be expensive, requiring a
significant premium to persuade investors that the expansion of ICI's coatings
business would be better achieved within a paints colossus rather than alone.
The report adds that a deal might give Akzo competition issues in the
British market, where ICI's Dulux brand competes head-on with its own Crown
brand, but a deal with ICI would enhance the Dutch company's presence in the
American retail market.
The paper cited analysts who reckon that the global coatings market is
poised for a shake-up next year. The big players are scrambling for a position
in growing Asian markets, while tighter health and safety rules are forcing
small, family-owned companies to consider the cost of acquiring the technology
necessary to stay in the market.

results only weeks away to get a closer look at that cashed up balance sheet. and might not be so long now before Akzo has made its intended disposals

Investment bank predicts takeover frenzy

Institutional investors are entering the new year with large amounts of cash to pour into booming stock markets and expect to see high numbers of company takeovers, according to Merrill Lynch.
"We have a high level of liquidity," equity strategist Charles Cara said in a report. "That points to a continued good environment for mergers and acquisitions," though it was unclear if 2007 could top the record year of 2006.
