Enhanced Specifications of Solid-State Batteries to rapid Temperature change

Ilika (AIM: IKA), a pioneer in solid-state battery technology, announces an upgrade of the Stereax(R) P180's technical specifications. This battery has now been verified to power sensors that are subjected to rapid temperature changes between room temperature and +140degC. This enhanced capability enables the Stereax P180 to operate industrial wireless sensors in even more hostile environment applications to monitor temperature, pressure or other data in industrial equipment, such as deposition systems used in the semi-conductor industry, where rapid cooling or heating of components occurs.

Ilika has previously demonstrated the ability of its Stereax P180, a solid-state battery of 180 uAh rated capacity, to operate at temperatures of up to +150degC for long, continuous periods of time, after controlled ramp rates between room temperature and +150degC. Following further testing, when the battery was repeatedly heated and cooled between room temperature (25degC) and 140degC, the battery maintained its discharge capacity of at least 180 uAh and functioned normally. Ilika has now verified that the Stereax P180 can retain its performance, even if it is subjected to practically instantaneous rapid heating or cooling cycles as short as a few seconds.

Data from sensors are connecting machines, people and services in everyday life (Smart Homes, Smart Vehicles, MedTech) and industry (Smart Infrastructure, Industry 4.0). For this connectivity to be enabled, sensors and other electronic devices may need to operate in hostile environments at high temperature, for example in manufacturing facilities, process plants and vehicles. Conventional batteries can only operate at up to 60degC and require additional and often cumbersome packaging to function at higher temperatures.

"The continuous development of Ilika's solid state battery technology and the specification upgrade demonstrated today will enable a larger range of industrial applications to be powered by solid-state batteries, enabling more efficient monitoring of high value equipment in the semi-conductor industry for example", added Ilika's CEO Graeme Purdy.
