17/9/2019 10:30 | It's not simply that "basic" Advfn does not show accurate data re buys vs sells. Data is not recorded by the stock market in such a binary fashion. What is recorded is the price at which trades are done. A time is also recorded, but that is the time the trade is booked, not the time it is done. Trades can be booked quite some time after they were actually done, even on a later day. When trades are tabulated by sites such as ADVFN, they take the list of trades and times and they compare the trade price with the bid/offer spread at the recorded time. If the trade is closer to the bid than the offer, they categorise it as a sell. If the trade is closer to the bid, they classify it as a buy. If the trade is exactly half way, then there is no meaningful way of attributing it to either buy or sell, so such trades are by definition allocated on an unreliable basis. However the real problem is that the time being used to reference the bid/offer spread is the time the trade was recorded which can be hours or even more behind the actual time. That means that the basis on which the bid/offer spread is being checked is completely unreliable. A buy which happened this morning might get compared to the spread from this afternoon which makes it look like a sell. All of which means that the buy/sell classificiation shown by ADVFN and its ilk is completely unreliable. Another issue is that large transactions are often split into multiple small transactions. The total gets recorded after the last bit gets done. There is no record of the indicidual sub-trades, their prices and their times. This makes the allocation of large trades to buy/sell even less reliable than smaller ones. And finally, every trade has a buyer AND a seller. There is no such thing as a one sided transaction. That makes the entire concept of buys vs sells rather dubious. T | tournesol

17/9/2019 09:26 | Jayrh. The spread was all over the place yesterday. Accurate reporting was impossible Buys and sells were happening at the same price. Just sit tight. | honestmarty
17/9/2019 09:05 | tsmith, the market makers are all about making a market. If there's little buying and mainly selling then the price drops, if there's mainly buying and little selling then the price rises. That's it. If they did what you suggest to just bag a few more then they're risking that traders will continue to sell in volume and that they'll get caught holding a lump. | hairballradical
