I looked for this online, but had to read the paper to see the story.

There was a small rise yesterday, and this morning's Mail market comment talked of 'rumours' and that the company was vulnerable after a steep fall.

Now the Mail would only be able to say this if it were fed the story from someone in the City: it's hardly a share which has drawn attention to itself of late.

So there may well be a takeover premium in the price now, but that doesn't mean the momentum will be maintained.

John.
Not a holder.

jlabrey, hi.

A good summary, thanks. I'd rather lost interest in these but ahead of the results might be a time to dip in.

The only worry I would have is the educational side, where I'm less enthusiastic about profit generation.

As we enter the closed period and prepare for interims, I thought it might be interesting to reflect on the current share price and what we can expect in a few weeks from the company.

First, why is the price so low? I think there are three factors at play. 1. Previous expectations were missed, leading to a fall in confidence; 2. General malaise in the advertising sector, on which HVX depends; and 3. Bearish tone on small caps generally.

So, what can we expect in the results? 1. Significant cost savings achieved from moving political publishing operations onto one site. 2. A turnaround in the training business - Fenman - which caused us trouble last time. 3. Expectations of further acquisitions in the second half. 4. Good growth in the political publishing market due to general election - new faces in government to impress. 5. Continued solid growth in the revision guides business - Lonsdale.

If all is achieved, broker consensus is of 2005 EPS of 2.5 pence, leaving the shares trading on a P/E of 13.4. This seems excellent value to me, particularly with a yield of nearly 3%. All is dependent on exploiting synergies within the across the existing businesses at this stage - and then making decent acquisitions.

Given the unloved nature of these shares at the moment, it might be fair to expect any surprises to be on the upside this time.

jonwig - I think VCT holdings have to be acquired at the time of issue (correct me if I'm wrong). HVX issues have been at 35, 25, 39 and 50p (in that order), so, yes, the latest 50p holdings are definitely looking sick although not quite so bad with the tax relief. The others are OK, given the VCT tax support, but hardly exciting.
However, VCT's usually have a minority of good runners which, if you're lucky, pay for the losses or mediocre performance of the remainder.
HVX is still in the hold and hope category and stands a slightly better than evens chance of coming good imho.

A report in this weekend's FT puts HVX among the most-held AIM stocks by VCTs: 15 of them are holders, if I remember correctly.

This isn't information you'd get from the company, of course, as most or all of the holdings will be sub-3%.

I suppose this has to be good news, though I suspect a lot of the holdings were bought at higher prices, when HVX was regarded as a stellar growth stock.

Not bought in, as the rating looks too dear, but interesting.

Nice new thread. Not sure about the title lol because i hold brpg and the previous thread for that said ftse 100 company in the making.

Quiet day trading. recent volume has died away so it will be interesting to see whether we get further rises.
