Interesting find Jailbird,

I wonder howmany producers are slowing output or running at a loss with current Nickel Prices.

Nickel was the best performer on Thursday as it found support of the positive fundamentals with the metal's most-traded May contract on the SHFE climbing to 87,990 yuan per tonne as at 9.41am Shanghai time, up by 2.0% or 1,710 yuan per tonne from Wednesday's close. The latest International Nickel Study Group (INSG) statistics pegged the global refined nickel market in a deficit of 118,700 tonnes over the January-October period in 2018, up from the 86,500 tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year, indicating that nickel's fundamental backdrop remains mildly positive. Just remember Llewellyn is sitting on 30kg of nickel and soon the roads are going to be full of them(EVs not Lewellyns). I'm a golf fan (on my third) , to VW the model is seen as their most important, they really won't want to get this wrong. My interpretation of what the VW guy was saying is that they are going to build the ID to a price, making sure they can sell them in volume. I predict us Golf enthusiasts will whinge that the cabin quality is not up to the usual standard but that's because they will do whatever is required to keep the price down. And for the future demand for nickel this aligns nicely.

There has been a lot of encouraging news on the EV front recently. Kia and Hyundai have released "ordinary" EVs with around 250 miles range at £30k. The main problems at the moment are no one is making them quick enough and they need to be cheaper. There are still bottlenecks with battery production, and despite what VW say (promise) they are trying to prolong the life of their ICEs to get the planned return from the capex. But finally we are starting to see some change. To me EVs are at the stage of the early flat screen TV, they are only going to get better, bigger(more range) and cheaper from here.

2019 should be "make or break" for HZM. Either way , it's going to be a rocky ride and NOT for the faint-hearted ?

I see from the "superb" Xmas TV schedules , that VW are now selling an All Electric VW Golf, so have beaten Tesla to the Mid-Sized Compact Market . THAT is going to sell !! Expect more of the same from other major motor manufs.

I agree JB, the speed nickel stocks are falling and the price just don’t make sense,the real impact of EV should start to be seen next year so this time next year ....

Still do not get Nickel prices Only explanation is this Nickel is being stored in other locations and not being used . It will be come online once prices go up again .Any reported China PMI figures also hits metals as fears of a slowdown ; Ned to see ongoing monthly figures to see the trend .But not sure if trade war will show further impact in coming monthsThis needs to be sorted .Only positive news would be construction license awarded and offtake news

ayesha4 - many thanks, I have heard similarly from JM in past. Would be interesting to know just who is expressing the interest, any offer would have to meet approval by major shareholders, Teck in particular. As well as their initial contribution to Araguaia seven years ago, they have also participated in several of the earlier fund raising a share price well north of here. I always speculate on whether Teck just want a good return on investment or whether they are waiting to take back control at a time opportune to them. Their board representation ensures they have finger on the pulse. A similar question now arises with Glencore.


I find it hard to believe that market won't wake up to HZM in 2019 with all the focus moving to Ni for EVs. Happy Christmas and New Year.
