Gold is a safe haven.
It's the derivatives that aren't - but they set the price for Gold.

good action in share price today ... shame PM's weak again

meanwhile the DOW still down -100 ... and after huge falls that's disappointing and no sign of catching a bid yet ... wonder if another huge sell off is in the offing a bit later

As I write, the FTSE 100 index is down about 2% today. That takes the fall from the mid-January to around 7.5%.

It also wipes out all the UK market’s gains over the last 12 months.

So is this finally the big one – the major pullback that I’ve been expecting for a while? Or is it just market ‘noise’?

krypton .. another slam on the DOW and prolonged weakness is possible which may again lead to mm's running for the hills on bids before the market even opens tomorrow.

That said at some stage investors will wake up to the fact that we are mining precious metals. Today's action was encouraging in HOC's share price but yes too early to tell on all fronts.

Personally I think we really need this global meltdown to be just that and continue into a stock / bond market crisis to free the PM's like in 2007 with the sub prime crime. Then the FED will open the box of tricks and find only QE4 available which will be rocket fuel for Gold and Silver and the death knell for the US$.

What we do need is some strength in PM's in the face of stock market weakness. You could argue we are seeing that by way of stability and modest gains. However the fact we are not rising significantly might mean that Joe Public are not onboard yet.

And maybe Powell.

Until then, we hold and watch...

Bill Fleckenstein referring to the catalysts that popped the last few bubbles .... 2000 was the Internet Stocks, 2007 was the Real Estate and today ....

"In the current environment, the most speculative element has been the crypto universe, which is 100% psychological, as there are literally no fundamentals behind crypto currencies. The craze for Bitcoins and their ilk will probably go down as the biggest mania of all time, making the tulip bulb craze seem somewhat sane. To the extent that is the case, the bursting of the crypto market, which I place at around Christmastime, likely signals the end of the current everything bubble."

"As for crypto, FUD will dispel, it will become oversold and yes it will will rebound to new highs."

You can't over sell thin air.

Naieve Holders of Cryptos have been falling for the line ..."Don't sell Cult" whilst the shrewd cash in. Value ebbing away like sand in an upturned egg timer.

DOW fell by 1600 at one point and that suggests plenty of sellers still out there.

The main thing I'm disappointed at currently is the performance of PM's during this carnage. However I remember the 2007 financial crisis and PM's hesitated whilst people still thought it was temporary issue but then took off to record highs.

Current action is normal and if this is the start of a serious stock market / bond issue, our time is not far away. And if not now, we have seen a dress rehearsal for the main event.

I followed the US miners last night and they did not take part in the market plunge.
Thats enough evidence of support of the sector for me and I'm in today here in HOC for the next phase - upwards, maybe not today but shortly enough. I paid 212.30 on spreads with IG.

I love the sales Top.

My last big buying spree here was in the 40p - 60p range and that worked out quite well.

May even get my 550p target this time.....

Fingers crossed.....

Dry powder available for any further sales opps!

Busy getting some cheap sale prices here GS? It does begin to look like 204-6p was the knife through butter to break that floor, but as Juju would tell us, mind the gaps!

The close last night is probably not technically so low as to be significant, and this intraday fall isn't relevant either if the close doesn't confirm it.

Glad I took plenty of the table at 250p - 10% loss on average - as I believe Stevea said he'd done. DT, if you've got the cash and the balls then get your average down here now and crow when the solid HOC stays above the water line whatever happens.
