Nationalisation prospect hovers over Lloyds
Ben Harrington

LLOYDS TSB stood out from the crowd, as a leading City analyst raised the prospect of the bank being nationalised once it completes its takeover of HBOS. Yesterday Simon Pilkington, JP Morgan Cazenove analyst, wrote in a note to clients that "the probability of nationalisation now feels uncomfortably high". Following HBOS's trading statement last Friday – which showed an impairment charge of £3.3bn at the bank's corporate banking division – Mr Pilkington downgraded the company from in-line to underperform. "We are conscious that our estimates show a poor outcome and there is great uncertainty," Mr Pilkington said. "Yet the speed and scale of deterioration
at HBOS Corporate is remarkable."

Once Lloyds TSB's acquisition of HBOS completes, Mr Pilkington believes the newly formed Lloyds Banking Group will be in loss in 2009 and 2010. "Our 2009 earnings estimates are below the annualised rate of impairment seen in the past five months, though the trend is accelerating and most observers expect commercial property values to fall further in 2009. Even before considering our 2010 earnings estimates, the probability of Lloyds Banking Group needing to raise additional capital has risen," the analyst concluded. Lloyds TSB shares fell 4.9 – or 4.5pc – to 124p.

here is a reminder of the 10 year chart!

if only we could get back to the starting price of about 650p... before HBOS started borrowing on the cash markets to drive growth and aquire BOS.

i wonder where this will end up, assuming we complete the takeover from lloyds and manage to pay back the treasury. the lloyds group of companies has formidable market share, and a full suite of banking activities at its disposal, with significant cost savings from the recent merger and backing from HM gov.

however, there is considerable debt problems relating to non payment of mortgages and loans in the forthcoming recession, and probable stiffer regulation to be imposed at some stage.

IMO hbos and lloyds are gold dust at these prices, but not without significant risk!

porridge, I did. After the $50bl scam in the US. Took as wee £1500 and came out. I decided not to be in banks at the moment. May come back after further evaluations and risk assessment. Good luck.

Sold all my LLOY this am at 135/6p and bought HBOS at 74p. With me intending to hold long term it seemed a bit of a no brainer to swap. Can't see the market keep that gap open for long and has started to close it since this am.
