Smithie, As retail investors we will be last to know, at my guess a couple of days behind.

Normal volume is around 30m, todays volume of 92m is perhaps significant, and no sign yet of M.S. reducing.

If the shorts are closing out it will take them about a week at this volume imo

Picture might be clearer once trades at end of the day are printed

With regard to the rns on M.S. position.

It shows that they have 7.65% in shares
Another holding that is out on loan to a short of about 0.3%
And their residual position is by equity swaps, these are a swap between an index price and hmso price, with M.S. being entitled to the HMSO appreciation against the index.

It would seem that M.S. have enough physical stock to sell to the shorts and have leveraged into that position with equity swaps. As i previously commented i think M.S have set a trap and executed it well so far.

The length of the equity swaps is interesting as M.S. have so far been in no rush to take a quick profit.

Smithie, unlikely that shorts have reduced by much as they are 276m short in total. Whilst todays bigger volume may indicate that someone is closing a short position, it is still about 14 days of normal volume to cover their cumulative positions.

The way i see this is that Morgan Stanley have set a trap and that the shorts have not seen it coming.

I would be willing to bet that shorters are reducing their positions, or have closed
with such big % moves against them yesterday & today surely they wld be mad to keep their position unchanged.

(but who knows they could be running some strategy, such as a pair trade, such as being long on another shopping mall share elsewhere
& maybe overall they are ahead, I don't know. But this chart is shouting to shorts, "close out", imo.

what exactly are the shorties waiting for? the share price to go down? The share price to go up? And to what levels.... I have never shorted so no clue... If you had shorted here yourself what exactly were you aiming in %? And what would you do right now?.... Grateful for any enlightnment

I doubt it, considering that X trillion shares were traded today

the world, & its mates, seem to have decided its a buy; so its unlikely imo they will suddenly change their mind

while yes, pullbacks do happen, this had one at 33p.
