The 2019 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report reveals that the UK health and fitness industry is healthier than it has ever been. It has more gyms, more members and a greater market value than ever before.

Several key milestones have been achieved over the last 12 months. The total UK membership has broken the 10 million mark and the industry is now worth more than £5 billion for the first time.

The elusive 15% penetration rate has not only been reached but exceeded with it now standing at 15.6%. In the UK, 1 in every 7 people is a member of a gym.

The 2019 report highlights that the industry, over the 12 month period to the end of March 2019, has seen increases of 2.9% in the number of fitness facilities, 4.7% in the number of members and 4.2% in market value. The rate of growth for members and market value is higher than last year across the public and private sectors.

Summary of Key Facts

* The number of fitness facilities in the UK is up from 7,038 to 7,239 this year.

* Total membership grew by 4.7% to 10.4 million.

* Total market value increased by 4.2% to £5.1 billion.

* The UK penetration rate passed 15% for the first time.

* 215 new fitness facilities opened in the last 12 months, down from 275 in 2018.

Barclays upgrades GYM to Overweight and increases the PT from 265p to 300p.
Every upgrade is positive, but I believe this one is particularly relevant because Barclays is one of the brokers that downgraded the stock earlier in the year, when analysts feared that reported price reductions observed in some gyms during the last months of 2018 could be an indication of oversupply. As a reminder, GYM dismissed those claims, arguing that the company has regularly done this sort of adjustments over the years.
In fact those concerns never materialised and this morning Numis also notes the 4th consecutive month of price increases for the total GYM estate.

Recent notes from Numis and Peel Hunt (the latter out today) reveal evidence of increased pricing at the GYM estate, offsetting November’s discounts. This is exactly what the market wanted to hear before jumping back into the stock. I would expect a solid trading update.

On fundamentals the share price should never have fallen below 250p - The GYM Group is making high quality gym use available to the masses at affordable prices, and without the ball and chain of a 12 month membership commitment.

Low cost gyms are the future - they are emptying the Virgin Fitness and David Lloyd Leisure Health Clubs of youngsters and leaving them largely to just the middle class snobs who would not be seen dead in a 'cheap' downmarket gym.

It is a fact that when you walk in through a gym entrance door it does not matter whether you're a billionaire or pauper, the amount of progress you will make will be directly proportional to the effort put in/intensity you choose to train at. And never forget it does not matter whether you're training to get more conditioning(lower body fat level) or to increase muscle mass - its still circa 80% diet no matter how hard you train because there are a lot of med/ high body fat, relatively fit people in most gyms that are still yet to learn that.

They don't normally give an update with the AGM.I'm guessing it will be next Wednesday if you go by the last 2 years.

Market was in fact expecting a trading update coinciding with the AGM but nothing came. If anything I would see that as an indication of no change in trends.
All resolutions were approved at the AGM.

GYM is expected to come out with a trading update next Tuesday. Given anecdotal evidence presented by Numis on their recent notes (in particular positive pricing), I would expect a solid update.
In the last couple of months, it is nice to see that GYM has (finally) outperformed domestic UK stocks, which have generally suffered with brexit uncertainty + macro jitters.

This has got to be one of the easiest shares to research and come to a buy/hold conclusion. Just go visit anyone of their gyms and see how packed they are. I see further dividend hike in the coming year.

Note out from Numis today, with positive comments on pricing development (recent concerns seem to be behind us), industry growth (acceleration in March) and supply dynamics (more small players exiting the market). Quite positive IMO.

Share price continues indeed to be well supported and it has easily outperformed the market over the last few weeks.
Broadly speaking we have seen the market rotating out of cyclical growth stocks and into secular growth stocks, a tailwind for GYM.
Additionally GYM clearly did not rebound as much as it would be justified by its solid financial performance and continues to trade at a huge discount to peer Basic-Fit.

£2.35 eh? Strange share price movements in both directions on very little volume. Still can't complain in the current climate. Look forward to some good news

A troll has an inflated sense of worth, and operates as if the world should revolve around him/her. He/she will try to make you angry, will often exaggerate, make it personal, and can have difficulty spelling.

The usual aim of trolls is to make people angry or to disrupt the conversation just for kicks. They want your attention. They want to start an argument.

Perhaps the best policy is to not waste one's time feeding the troll. Use of the filter button is called for!

Peel Hunt have been pretty consistent in their target price since they raised it from 300p in June 2018 to 350p in August 2018.
