Ferguson told to sell first and buy later
First Published: Aug 04, 2002

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was told by the club's chief executive that he must offload players before splashing out on expensive new stars.

Last month the Scottish boss signed England centre-half Rio Ferdinand from United's English Premiership rivals Leeds for 30 million pounds (47.3m dollars) - a world record fee for a defender.

Unusually, United did not win a single trophy last season and Ferguson has been linked with Brazil World Cup star Ronaldo and Aston Villa's England striker Darius Vassell as he looks to strengthen his squad.

But United chief executive Peter Kenyon said players would have to be offloaded before the Old Trafford club spent more than 15m pounds on a new player.

Striker Dwight Yorke has already joined English Premiership side Blackburn for 2.6m pounds but Kenyon said others had to leave as well if more big-money signings were to take place.

"You can never say no about what you might have to pay in the future, but the reality is that whether you pay 10 million (pounds) or 30 million it has to be in line with what the business can afford," Kenyon told BBC Radio Sunday.

"The reality of the situation to date is that you can't just keep spending and adding players to the squad."

He added: "The rumour we hear is that Ronaldo will be going to Real Madrid, we have neither approached or been approached about Ronaldo. Neither him or Darius Vassell feature in our ideas."

Kenyon explained that, in the case of the 23-year-old Ferdinand, United would not be paying Leeds in one lump sum but structuring their payments over the next five years.

"You don't spend 30 million on a player lightly, but it was a real target," Kenyon insisted.

"We decided at the end of last season that the area that needed strengthening was the defence.

"What we were looking for was a player who could make the difference.

"We have a payment structure that covers the next 12 months and a performance-related element for the next five years, that gives everybody some protection.

"Ultimately it depends on how successful we are. We will be delighted if over the five-year period we have to pay that, because that means we will have been as successful over the next five years as we have in the last five."

And even Manchester United - the richest club in the world - are making concessions after their recent £30m purchase of Ferdinand.

The Old Trafford club are eager to bring in a new striker ahead of the Champions League deadline of August 31 but insist it must be done on limited funds.

Even the £1.5m price tag West Ham have placed on Paolo Di Canio is beyond United's means at present and a club source revealed yesterday that any deals must be done for 'next to nothing'.

Asked if he was still interested in Di Canio, Ferguson gave an emphatic 'No', but added: 'I've always worked on the principle that I like to have four strikers and it's possible I'll buy one before the season starts.'

United's five England World Cup stars will play half a game each against Ajax in Amsterdam tonight.
