'In corporate news, Allergan has pulled out of the pursuit for Shire only hours after saying it was pondering a possible takeover offer. The botox-maker confirmed in a statement on Friday morning that it "does not intend to make an offer for Shire".'

Again strange share price reaction here. If Shire disappears more pharma sector cash should be available for investment in other companies....including gsk.

Experts query case for GlaxoSmithKline's new 3-in-1 lung drug

Do they make a drug which enables people to ignore "experts"?

Personally, I think the Pfizer 'deal' was a non-starter.

Africa now has its own potential BSE equivalent , so another form of prion disease now possible

A neurodegenerative disease discovered on camels in Ouargla
15 April 2018

A scientific study carried out by the Italian Higher Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS) in collaboration with the universities of Tlemcen and Ouargla has led to the discovery of a new prion disease on camels of the region of Ouargla, reports the Outbreak News Today website.

Prion diseases (pathogenic protein) are life-threatening neurodegenerative diseases that can affect animals and humans, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), the common name of which is disease of the liver. Mad Cow).

The neurological symptoms seen in dromedaries precisely recalled those of mad cow disease, leaving Algerian researchers suspect that it would be a prion disease. Suspicions were confirmed by laboratory tests carried out by researchers at the Italian Health Institute. Symptoms suggestive of prion disease appeared in 3.1% of dromedaries brought to the slaughterhouse of Ouargla during the 2015-2016 period.

The new disease has been dubbed "Camel Prion Disease", which can be translated into "camel prion disease". The relatively high frequency of the disease and the involvement of the lympho-reticular system suggest that it is a communicable disease within the species and widespread in the region, says the study.

"The discovery of a new prion disease in an animal species with economic and food value in large areas of the planet raises important issues of public health and food security," said Gabriele Vaccari, head of ISS.

"Camel rearing is widespread throughout North and Central Africa, as well as in the Middle East, Asia and Australia, and is an important element in the economy of many populations. In many areas, camels are used for the production of milk and meat for human consumption, "said the researcher.

The results of the investigation so far suggest that the prion disease affecting the camel is different from BSE, with the cow being the only animal to have so far shown that its disease could be transmitted to humans with more than 200 deaths in different parts of the world, says the study. Nevertheless, the risk to humans is currently unknown, and a thorough investigation is needed to clarify its zoonotic potential, say the researchers.

@Nico9. I don't have an account with ii, but did used to work in private client brokerage/banking. I'll give you my 2 cents.
Such operations have an obligation under 'Know your customer'/best practice to profile their customers, and periodically review and update that information. It's so they know who they are dealing with, and that only suitable products are available to suitably knowledgeable or experienced clients. No gambling e-coins for a pensioner granny. No dodgy Soviet plutocrats using a/c's to salt away dirty money etc.

I can't tell what they specifically wrote re: 'restrict'. It could be simply that if you disclosed you have only ever traded/invested in shares that they might have, or might newly impose, a restriction on you deciding to commence trading FX, or future options, etc. They do have some responsibility to try and limit your ability to self-immolate via potentially having access to products that could be inappropriately risky for you.

That said, these profiling exercises can be dressed up as the above, but also serve to get clients to broadly disclose where their wealth is. For example if your broker sees you disclose that you have another fat a/c with another broker then they might consider that the assets in the other a/c are a target for 'harvesting' - and that is the actual term for it. Ie encouraging the client to close the rival a/c and bring the assets into the harvesting broker's a/c.

On the face of it I can't see why you should disclose info that does not concern them, but be conscious that by doing so it might shut you off from some services/products etc. I find it unlikely that they'd summarily put unlisted restrictions on your a/c, what you're currently using it for, without having to explicitly detail them and warn you.

HTH, and if you were to copy/paste the wording of their request re: potential a/c restriction the context of their intention might become clearer.

Anyone had their divi reinvested? My account in II they do it within a couple of days of the divi coming in. But in HL, it seems to just sit in my account for a week or so before it gets reinvested?

nico9,

I'm with AJ Bell and I'm happy with them, but I have seen the occasional criticism, as is the case with pretty well all execution only brokers.

well ii did say that if i dont comply with giving my wealth info they could restrict my account in some way!!!! Not sure how thy would do that but im more interested as to why they are only asking me as others havent been asked before and i have NEVER been asked for Personal information before from TDW in the many years of having an account with them.
I did look into AJ Bell too so would welcome any experience with that company if amyone uses them?

Halifax is more secure than iWeb if it came to bankruptcy where one could lose all holdings!

Just opened an account as iWeb - part of the Halifax group - same interface and facilities (a bit limited and outdated) as Halifax Sharedealing - but less than half the price. £25 to open one account (subsequent accounts free) but trades are £5 as opposed to £12.50 with Halifax. No other charges for usual dealing, no additional ISA charges - so I'm switching my 2 Halifax accounts to iWEB. I also have 4 accounts with IG Index, who I prefer but don't want to have my entire portfolio with one service.

Thanks Nico,

I was bothered by the fees and I still don't like seeing them come out of my account, but like you I do enough trades to cover the costs, so other than my own dislike for them it's not actually costing me anything.

Still, I'm considering putting my new ISA allocation elsewhere, especially following the Beaufort Securities incident. It's clearly not a good idea having all your eggs in one basket.

So far IG is the favourite.

I used to be TDW now ii. Pile of poo!! Just been posted a survey asking about my Personal wealth etc!!! And I have to POST back the details!!!!

nico9,

I'm an ex-TDW customer too, transferred over to II and still there mainly as a result of laziness.

Nothing that II has done thus far has made me dislike the service though, interested is the archaic communications is your only gripe or has there been other things that have caused your "pile of poo" assesment?

I'm with sicker, I just wouldn't reply to a survey like that, online or postal.

Well apart from the wealth survey they want me to fill in then the charges I now pay isnt great
Never paid quarterley fees with TDW but now both the Mrs and I pay twice as both have ISAs although I get mine back if I do enough trades.

sorry for late reply
btw I will not be posting the Wealth info back as already burnt it. If they insist on it I will change my account!!!
