I can't help but being struck that more and more papers report the large Elliott stake as a "fact". Either their journos are all being taken in, to a (wo)man, or there is some truth in what they're printing, or they are all copying the original story. Or something inbetween. Interesting.

I hope the story about Elliott is true - and the FT printing it gives me some hope that it is - and that the board and other large shareholders are merely biding their time before giving her the old heave-ho.

when they say toughest - what does that mean? Boxing? or what? Surely that is a meaningless expression.
I understand smartest, that could mean nice dresser of is in upper quartile in Mensa tests.
In a more general sense, a typical UK pensioner relying on state pension is probably smarter and a tougher money manager then these rich Americans born with a shed load of silver spoons in their mouths. They probably couldn't fight their way out of paper bag.

There also used to be 'free' shares for some of the top guys - a small note buried deep in the footnotes.

I think it is the eye-popping remuneration for average to below par boardroom performance that really annoys me. I was reading how much EW has 'earned' in share options to date on the other chat board. An amazing gig if you can get it...oh, to be part of the cozy club and the UK remuneration committee circuit as well.
Anyway, I wonder how long Elliott were researching GSK before they showed their hand? Certainly going to be an interesting few months here now. GLA.

Bernie Madoff used to post 13F filings every quarter for years. No one at the SEC checks them, so they might not be accurate.

Looking at what is going on with MRW, maybe Elliot is right; in today's climate for deals the way to go is to sell the healthcare business.

So hedge your bets. I'm in big pharma, GSK, and small pharma services supplying big pharma, orph. Seems sensible to me.

For all developed countries health expenditure is rising. More importantly, expenditure on pharma as a percentage of health spending is forecast to increase considerably over the coming years and decades as we try to both avoid and prepare for future pandemics of various kinds. Basically, the near future is about designing drugs for theoretically possible new viruses, and variants of existing viruses, which don't exist yet in nature (and hopefully never will).That's why the likes of Elliot are interested - it's a government sponsored worldwide growing market for GSK, and others, expertise.
