21/3/2005 23:03 | Welcome back Ashley! For what its worth the whisper in Bermuda is that the reason the sale didnt go through last time was the issue surrounding syndicate 102 and the fact that the reserves for the outstanding court case on the bond reinsurance were too low. There maybe potentially more than £20 million downside from here on these two issues. Also 2002,2003 and 2004 are still developing and it is more than possible they will worsen potentially materially. 2004 will be known six nine months from now. Whereas 2002 and 2003 with significant amounts of long tail business have a significant while to develop yet. Only a whisper though, nothing here based on fact! Anyone looking to buy this franchise will want finality (hmmm same word which trouble SVB) on both these issues. Also ask your self this. Why would a company/investor want to buy Goshawk? a) For the tax losses? No they've been sold. b) For their proven underwriting team? No they are writing a new book of short tail business as yet no track record. c) To get access to the bermudian market? Its very easy to set up in Bermuda, they are begging well capitalised start ups to come along. d) For their reputation? They dont have one. e) Because they are buying something at a discount to its true net asset value? Not when you take the views outlined above vis reserves. f) for their technology? No you can buy a turnkey back office contract very cheaply, after that you are using the likes of RMS and Cat-trader which virtually all the major players now use. The fool! | paddyfool | |
