A solid bet on oil prices
I believe Genel is one of the best and most conservatively run oil companies trading in London today. As the oil industry has grappled with a cyclical downturn during the past few years, Genel has been able to escape most of the industry’s troubles thanks to its cash rich balance sheet and low production costs. What’s more, the group’s experienced managers have proved to be a steady hand on the tiller during these stormy times.

Indeed, during 2016 to conserve cash in lean times, Genel cut capital spending to a range of $90m to $110m but thanks to better than expected cost savings, spending came in at $61m for the year. For 2017 capex is expected in be in the region of $125m, although based on past performance I wouldn’t rule out a lower figure at the end of the year.

To fund spending, as well as cash generated from operations, Genel reported an unrestricted cash balance of $408m at year-end. Company production guidance for the year is 35k to 43k bopd.

Unfortunately, City analysts aren’t expecting Genel to report a profit until 2018 but rising oil prices could change this forecast. And if the company reveals better than expected numbers over the next few months, the shares could quickly re-rate higher. Put simply, time could be running out to buy Genel.

24p, I have gone both up and down today, with only 10K on the long side, as had too many surprises with this one, until I see a clear up trend I do not intend to buy in any further until that time. Been too cavalier in the past, always lost money, not good for the old ticker. Like I said at the weekend, cannot afford to be margined out this time around. Feel so sick over KAZ and Glen, as if I had done similar at the time with those too, my bank account would have looked a lot healthier then it does today.

Trading and operations update


Production from Taq Taq and Tawke is not constrained by pipeline capacity
KRI OPERATIONS

-- Genel's operations in the KRI remain safe and secure
-- At Taq Taq, plans to increase surface processing capacity to 150,000 bopd through mobilisation of a temporary production facility are on track for Q1 2015. Completion and commissioning of the second central processing facility is on track for Q3 2015. Works to increase the processing capacity at the Tawke field are on schedule to complete in Q1 2015

-- Final PSC amendments for the new commercial structure governing the Miran and Bina Bawi fields are expected to be completed in Q1 2015. Progress is being made on the sale and purchase agreement for OMV's 36% operated stake in the Bina Bawi field, completion of which is subject to the finalisation of documentation
