Results in a couple of days I guess. I read (can't find link) that there are 800k carats on sale, which is larger than the july auction, so we may see a figure above the previous values.

Encouraging that this will mean almost USD100m of revenues this year with a low quality emerald, and a ruby auction still to come. It's a little bit artificial as we'll have more stones sold this year than perhaps would normally be the case, but still rather nice.

It has been announced that the next higher-quality Gemfields emerald auction is in Lusaka this week.

The last higher quality Gemfields emerald auction was also in Lusaka - US$31.5

hxxp://www.southerntimesafrica.com/news_article.php?id=8638&title=Lusaka+emerald+auction+a+success&type=67#.Uwrxdvl_uoo

The figures for the previous three higher quality auctions all of which were in Singapore were in US$ 31.6, 26.2 26.8 - this from

Thanks for those articles.

Shows that the end value price per carat is only going up for sapphires and rubies but the rough cut price will differ to those mentioned in the articles. Of course, if the end value price is rising due to demand then so will rough cut. I suppose we shall just have to wait until the ruby auction to see what they can fetch.

"Some of this strategy is now rubbing off on coloured stones industry. Miners like Gemfields Plc, the world's largest emeralds company, are using advertising, branding and savvy linkages with jewellers to create a similar image for coloured stones. Gemfield mines are ensuring a steady supply of emeralds which allows retailers to design collections around them. Certified quality and assurance of ethical trade gives added peace of mind. Luckily for coloured stones, the timing was perfect. The economic recession and spiraling gold prices put the brakes on customer spend. Women wanted stylish jewellery without breaking the bank. Coloured stones were the answer. Though the price of high-quality emerald has risen ten-fold to $5 a carat in the last three years, it is more affordable than a diamond."

This from

where there is also the suggestion that Gemfields approach to grading rubies, in the same way as they have created a grading system for emeralds, will raise the demand for and price of rubies -

I have no expertise on this but it seems that exceptional gems may fetch a few hundred dollars to 50000 per carat, one source said 2000 $s but bigger stones of good quality are the vogue it seems.

Share price is steady here, which is pleasing. The current pattern with the latterly few weeks of trading sideways smacks of a continuation pattern, thus implying that any hint of good news will catalyse the stock upward. Beyond 40p is not so very far away, given that management deliver on their strategy.

Very much looking forward to the ruby auction results. Does anyone know what kind of per carat realized $ price we can expect for rough cut rubies?

From what I have read, emeralds are the cheapest of the traffic light three (sapphires, rubies and emeralds). That obviously bodes well, considering that emeralds are doing very well for us right now. Plus, a sapphire deposit acquisition would be a very welcome development.

Rubies are alleged to command a significant premium to emeralds. Not sure what kind of multiple though.

Hmm, good performance at Faberge, still looking at new resource acquisitions. Note they did not specify that they were looking at only sapphire deposits, implying that multiple gemstone deposit types are being assessed. Promising.

Shame about the fall in production but that is inevitable every once in a while. Their stock piles are large, so it will not affect auctions.

Ticking along steadily. I'm especially pleased with Faberge and the appointment of þe new big honcho.

Fastjet starts low cost flights to Zambia today and that should help keep down the flight costs for buyers at Gemsfield auctions there.

Market update for the 2nd quarter was at the end of January in 2011 and 2013 but not until 1st March in 2012.
Interesting to know the date of the next auction. That is likely to be for the higher quality stones.
Better share price action today - ended with buying at 36p.

547 - certainly an update soonish. I was thinking perhaps early next week. I suspect you meant Sapphires for the acquisition?

A nice steady report without any nasty surprises will keep me happy.

Should have update tomorrow for the quarter ending 31st December, if history is anything to go by.

Zambian government auction talks?
Emerald deposit acquisition?
Ruby auction update?
Faberge trading update?
Main market listing?

There really is so much in the pipeline which could be good for the share price

Kagem pays the divi. - 25% goes to the Zambian gov. and 75% to Gemfields.

"Kagem Mining Limited ("Kagem') is approximately 60km from Kitwe in Lufwanyama District. Kagem is the largest emeralds mine in the World. Kagem is owned 75% by GemfieldsPic (UK) and 25 % by the Government of the Republic of Zambia."

imho the only way the Zambian gov. can benefit from Kagem (other than by selling its stake)is by receiving dividends from Kagem. Clearly every time a divi. is paid to the Zambian gov., Gemfields will also receive a divi.

Gemfields may or may not pass on some or all of that divi. to the Gemfields shareholders.

hxxp://ukzambians.co.uk/home/2013/12/20/government-receives-k10-94m-dividend-from-kagem/

Kagem Mining Limited, Zambia's largest emerald producer, has declared a dividend of K41.6 million (US$8 million), of which K10.94 million (US$2 million) has been paid to the Government of the Republic of Zambia, which is a 25 per cent shareholder in the company.

Cont...

Ian Harebottle, CEO of Gemfields plc and of Kagem, said:

"This dividend – a truly remarkable milestone – is the culmination of more than five years of very hard work. First, we invested heavily in the restructuring, redevelopment and expansion of Kagem. Second, we've implemented – on a scale never before seen in the Zambian gemstone sector – an innovative and sustained international marketing campaign for Zambian emeralds, promoting them as a reliable, secure and ethical source of supply.

I wonder if the GEM shareholders will receive the 2% divi....

So the Kagem mine pays GEM US$6 million and Zambian gov. US$2 million. Presumably the divi. payment will have been sanctioned by GEM. Is this divi. payment a ploy to help convince the Zambian gov. that to hold the better quality emerald auctions outside Zambia might in fact net the gov. more cash - through larger divi. payments - than holding those auctions inside Zambia?
