Govt to import 8 lakh MT of coal in 3 years
Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has proposed the government to import eight lakh tonnes of coal to feed the 525MW coal-fired power plant at Barapukuria in Dinajpur, said officials concerned.

The BPDB made the proposal to import the coal in next three years till 2021 as the country’s lone coal mine company, also at Barapukuria, is unable to meet the power plant demand, said the officials.

At present the power plant requires about 5200 tonnes of coal per day. The Barapukuria coal mine will supply only 20.28 lakh metric tons of coal against the requirement of 31.29 lakh tonnes till 2021, the BPDB Projection said.
Late of the last year, the government plans to import one lakh metric tonnes of coal to feed the 525 MW power plant but backtracked due to higher cost proposed by suppliers.

The Barapukuria coalmine company Ltd supplies per metric tonne of coal to Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) at US$130 whereas the company -- Vitol Asia Pte Ltd -- sought US$282.91 per tones last year.

The cost includes FOB (Freight on Board) price ($118), freight cost $7, local transportation ($87.47), port charges, transshipment loading, unloading, insurance and other charges.

The total cost of the consignment, having one lakh metric tonnes of coal, will be around Tk 236 crore or US$28.29 million.

The power plant suspended its production on July 22, 2018 for an indefinite period due to lack of fuel supply, a fallout of around 1.45 lakh tonnes of coal “going missing” from the coal mine yard. Prime Minister’s Power and Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury at a meeting on August 13, 2018 asked the authorities concern to make arrangement for import of at least one lakh tonnes of coal on emergency basis to feed the Barapukuria power plant.

As per the proposal, the Power Division informed the PMO that it will require around 5200 metric tonnes of coal considering the 100 percent electricity generation capacity of the three units of Barapukuria.
But, the power division suspended the proposal to import the coal because of the higher tariff proposed by suppliers, sources said.
