A big and important move for FST IMO.Selling modules to OEMs is challenging and expensive if you are a small company - much better to license the software to massive companies like NXP, and let them do the business of selling chips/modules to their customer base.As long as FST can license their software to several other companies, especially far east ones, then they might really have a successful business on their hands.

Frontier collaborates with NXP on new Smart IoT software licensing business

London, 29 August 2018

Frontier Smart Technologies, a pioneer in digital audio solutions, announces the launch of a new Smart IoT software licensing and services business line. The first collaborator in this venture is leading silicon manufacturer, NXP® Semiconductors.

Frontier is providing its fully featured SmartSDK and design services to major brands and ODMs who are developing voice-enabled smart devices. Frontier’s SmartSDK is a mature starting point for the development of reliable and sophisticated networked devices and can be deployed in a range of IoT systems including smart audio, home automation, smart appliances and security.

Frontier’s SmartSDK has already been successfully deployed as part of the company’s turnkey solutions in over 20 smart audio IoT products incorporating Google’s Chromecast platform and Google Assistant. Now Frontier is offering its SmartSDK as a standalone software proposition. In conjunction with licensing the SmartSDK, Frontier is also providing software design services to help customers bring their smart products to market quickly and cost-effectively.

To strengthen the appeal and flexibility of its software proposition, Frontier is working with NXP to port its SmartSDK to NXP’s recently announced i.MX 8M Mini, a new quad core SoC optimized for customers adding voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Alexa to smart home products. The i.MX 8M Mini brings high compute efficiency and security to a range of edge node computing, streaming multimedia and machine learning applications.

NXP’s i.MX 8M Mini includes several innovative features which will enable substantial improvements to battery life for voice assistants. It also offers strong support for multi-channel audio products such as soundbars.

Anthony Sethill, Chief Executive Officer, Frontier Smart Technologies, said:

I have been a greedy barsteward and am reducing my bloated salary by 90% in line with the share price collapse I am responsible for. Furthermore, Johnny Appetites and I are returning the unmerited bonuses and share options we looted from shareholders' pockets.......oops, not really.

“The launch of our Smart IoT licensing and services business is an important development for Frontier and its customers. The Smart IoT sector is highly competitive, and it is essential that we offer brands the maximum flexibility in designing and launching new products. The combination of our SmartSDK with NXP’s i.MX 8M Mini provides a compelling proposition to the smart IoT market.”

Martyn Humphries, Vice President of i.MX Applications Processors for Consumer and Industrial Markets at NXP, said:

“The i.MX 8M Mini processor brings together the high-performance compute, power efficiency, and embedded security required for smart IoT and other consumer and industrial applications. Our collaboration with Frontier, with its proven capability in digital audio and extensive relationships across the sector, provides a powerful and effective new route to market for this family of processors.”

Always amusing to see all this negativity and company rubbishing when they are at and all time low, I do not recall the same sort of posting on the way up to £1:90, well done to Richard for selling when he did.
I am a great believer in stop losses but they get blown to bits when there is a 50% downside in one hit, still like Rob Evans, I think there will be a bit of a recovery here but takes a brave man and all that.

All the voice guys are in a price war, effectively keeping companies like this out of the loop.
"Works with", works with what? All the big boys have their own solutions so high volume sales or a sell out seem unlikely.
Their best option is still DAB and that's depleting with glovane having a much better and cheaper solution.

Now this looks promising!https://www.frontiersmart.com/frontier-first-bring-multi-ecosystem-voice-control-smart-speakers-1#.W3_REyjTXb0Frontier: first to bring multi-ecosystem voice control to smart speakersLondon, 24 August 2018Frontier Smart Technologies, a pioneer in Smart Audio solutions, announces a significant enhancement to its Smart Audio platform, which will be the first in the world to allow smart speakers, soundbars and AVRs to be simultaneously controlled by voice-enabled devices from Google, Amazon and Apple.Frontier's new "WorksWith" reference design is powered by the company's well-established Minuet Smart Audio module and SmartSDK. This upgrade enables Smart Audio products, without built-in microphones, to be controlled by any voice-enabled device incorporating Google Assistant, Amazon's Alexa Voice Services, or Apple Siri – giving consumers the freedom to choose their preferred voice ecosystem.Manufacturers and brands will be able to position their devices as being controllable via any of the major voice assistant ecosystems, i.e. their product "Works with Google Assistant", "Works with Alexa" and can be voice-controlled via an Apple HomePod. In addition, the platform also supports multiroom applications with Google Chromecast built-in and Apple AirPlay 2.The first product based on Frontier's "WorksWith" reference platform comes from TechniSat Digital GmbH, who will be introducing their new all-in-one music system at IFA, Berlin in September. The DIGITRADIO 581 all-in-one music system supports Works with Google Assistant, Works with Alexa, Works with HomePod, Chromecast built-in, Airplay2, Internet radio, DAB/DAB+, FM radio, CD, USB playback. Prem Rajalingham, Chief Commercial Officer, Frontier Smart Technologies, said:"Voice-enabled devices are transforming the audio marketplace, but not all smart audio products require their own dedicated voice input. With the launch of Frontier's WorksWith platform, we are enabling digital audio brands to develop products which maintain the highest standards in terms of audio performance – and which are also compatible with all three of the major ecosystem platforms. TechniSat is our launch partner on this project. We expect other brands to follow shortly."Stefan Kön, Managing Director, TechniSat, said:"This is our entry into the voice-controlled smart audio market. We have chosen Frontier's solution because it allows us to develop a class-leading music system, which can be controlled by voice-enabled devices from Google, Amazon or Apple. For us, it is important to be compatible with all the major ecosystems."

Getting bought out by one of the bigger players looks the best outcome here.

It's so competitive and commoditising rapidly that being standalone isn't feasible for such a small company.

SmartHome for the future is no panacea as price expectations are in the dirt already.
Best bet might be a few new product launches that put them on the radar of a larger entity.

That's where it gets interesting and imho why the added the 2 new NEDs.
They raise or they sell. I just can't see a long term future for this.
If they can't raise it a trade sale.
