Wimax (general stuff, dated today)

Internet connectivity is delivered by wireless high-speed mobile broadband and Wi-Fi, along with Bluetooth and Ultra-Wideband technology for wireless connection to a wealth of other compatible devices. Lenovo reports that models carrying WiMAX -- the successor to Wi-Fi -- will be available later in 2008



Lenovo has also said that it plans to launch WiMAX supporting models later in the year.

This is probably the key quote:

"A true cynic might also note that T-Mobile's position prevents anyone deploying WiMAX, a technology that likes to paint itself as a competitor to LTE, while the final details of the LTE standard are thrashed out. T-Mobile is committed to LTE, so even if the spectrum were available tomorrow they wouldn't be able to roll out a network for a while yet, so any delay can only work in their favour."

As the 2.5 GHz spectrum will be key to WiMAX in the UK, any delay can only help LTE. Also, if as I suspect OFCOM are delaying the decision on varying the terms of F4's license until after the auction, it puts that decision off even longer. Looks like not much will happen 'till 2009...

On-Communications, the wireless internet and telecommunications service provider, has launched what it claims is the first wireless service, using WiMAX technology, for Sheffield businesses.
The Sheffield City Airport-based company says it is increasing capacity and availability of its symmetrical internet service to the whole of Sheffield as a result of increasing demand.

Similar services have been launched in central London, Greater Manchester and Oxford and are about to be launched in Leeds.

On-Communications' service cuts out the need to install a special line or use a BT's 'local loop' to connect to a broadband internet service. It also allows users to upload data at the same speed they download it.

Hence the cruelty of this latest delay in the 2.6GHz auction. In WiMax, BT has at its disposal a technology with which it can finally give the 3G operators a genuine run for their money. Rolling out a nationwide WiMax network has been a key strategic objective of BT's for some time. The organization is all set to go. The WiMax infrastructure vendors are raring to go as well: The BT opportunity was likely a significant factor behind Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR - message board)'s OEM agreement with Nortel Networks Ltd. (NYSE/Toronto: NT - message board), for example. All that's needed now is a license at 2.6GHz, and it's a reasonable bet that BT will bid "whatever is necessary" whenever the auction is finally held.

While the additional delay is certainly cruel from BT's perspective, that doesn't mean it's unjustified. Of course, the 3G operators are filibustering; but there is also some substance to their filibustering. In particular, the cellular operators object that they can't accurately value the 2.6GHz spectrum until they have greater clarity on the future of their 900MHz GSM licences, and their rights to re-farm the 900MHz spectrum for W-CDMA or LTE (Long-Term Evolution).

jesey, ok, it just sounded a bit strait to the point, anyway, i think this is going to be very interesting in the next couple of years, if it was going under it would have by now, or there abouts, but its started to rise, and with all the info out there it can only help.
as for 5p, i think your right, and a lot of others will follow your lead im sure, but until we get there we wont know, lets hope we're right.

markie parkie and plast, I was only having a laugh I did pretty badly out of the whole Pipex shennaniggins and shafting. I managed to shift 58% @ 10p but this didn't exactly make me smile a lot.

Lets hope this climbs. I'll be out of here like a shot if we reach 5p.

Established in 2007, M-WAG aims to bring together companies from across the telecoms and media industries with the aim of demonstrating the business case for mobile WiMAX.

Mobile WiMAX is provides fast, robust and secure mobile broadband connectivity at a much reduced cost compared to other alternatives.

The group is carrying out user trials on the network. A trial network in Maidstone, Kent is M-WAG's first in the U.K. and is being used to demonstrate a number of different consumer and business applications. The network will cover 7.5 square kilometers reaching more than 75,000 people and 4,500 businesses. Once the network is ready, M-WAG will begin a range of trials in areas including broadcast, CCTV, public safety, mobile VoIP, and WiFi (News - Alert)-to-WiMAX handover.

MLL is an active participant in the Maidstone pilot network, which runs over 2.5GHz and covers 7.5 square kilometers in the center of the town.

"The expertise and experience gained from building this mobile WiMAX network is invaluable," said Kenny Kamal, CTO at MLL Telecom, in a statement. "If any companies who are considering bidding in the upcoming auction for the 2.6GHz spectrum would like to come and see it for themselves they are very welcome."

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said it will award three WiMax licences by the end of next month in a bid to revive the country's internet broadband market.

WiMAX is a wireless digital communications system, which can provide broadband wireless access across 30 miles for fixed phone, and 3 - 10 miles for mobile stations.

The telecom regulator already asked for proposal from the interested companies to take part in the coming auction.

The commission said it will allocate 30MHz (megahertz) spectrum to each WiMax operators to provide high-speed broadband services.

"We are now working for conducting WiMax auction, due in September," said a high official of BTRC.

Not sure the 3.6 GHz band will be the one adopted nationally - it's much more likely to be the 2.4-2.5 GHz (as used in the US): 3.6 GHz doesn't penetrate buildings that well and therefore masts have to be that much closer together (the 9 cells in Manchester for example are spaced at about 1 per kilometre). The mobile WiMAX trial in Kent is in the 2.5 GHz and that band will be auctioned off this autumn - then we'll see who is likely to build a nationwide service.

In the meantime F4C may have a market with SMEs but are still limited by the fact that their license is for fixed wireless access (FWA) only. The news we're all waiting for is whether or not OFCOM have agreed the license variation (and at what price). I suspect that decision is being delayed until after the 2.5GHz auction.

As for the SP: with potentially 1.7p a share being returned to shareholders in a year or so, price doesn't look too bad (about 0.5p a share for the half-stake in the WiMAX business).

According to WBA officials, the new WiMax operator members of WBA offer public WiFi services, include FREEDOM4, NOMAD, Unwired and YTLE. Other new members include Comfone (News - Alert), iPass, MACH, Quiconnect, Syniverse and Verisign. Bringing extensive roaming experience and knowledge into WBA, the providers are expected to allow interoperability across technologies, devices and network. Another new member of the WBA is Connection Services, which specializes in providing services such as global hotspot directory, according to officials.
