Iran..no chance the u.s. really doesn't have too much of a beef with them but in the interests of regional stability (which is why they didn't finish off Iraq after desert storm),they have to have the occasional verbal sortie with them to keep them aware of what could happen.
Iraq..done deal..but it's been flagged for many weeks so maybe they sold the rumour..so far in 2002 highest high to lowest low is -770 points so I'm not sure that an attack on Iraq will do much other than a short-term spike lower. Maybe buying some Swiss francs a good idea as it's recently been held artificially low by SNB.

NAS bounced off a critical support level late Friday just when you might expect longs to be closing for the weekend. And what rallied the Dow at the same time ? .. perhaps the US supports the contrarion view .. we'll see ..

Friend of mine in the fund management business tells me he's seen a lot of short covering in jap bank stocks over the last few days also there was a report Friday that MOF is supporting plans for a Y15tn capital infusion into the banking system,,they simply can't afford to let it go belly-up. Whether this is bullish for anything else (or even for Japan) I don't know..seems like enron-style accounting on a National scale. Nevertheless he's seeing what he terms 'smart' money bargain hunting jap investment trusts. I have no position in japan

Croc,
Many thanks for the excellent intro to the week ahead, as usual.

Red Army, Likewise, agree things are not looking up, plus a number of big FTSE charts are looking bearish.

I do not trade US stocks that often but I believe you can trade most of the major Nasdaq stocks with L2 included. I will verify your question tomorrow regarding margins and come back to you.

I recently opened a CMC account

Have two computers in my house and one at my office.

One of the computers in my house is an old Gateway P1 200mmx with 64 mg of memory. The other is a P4 1000 512mg memory. The faster tends to be used by my son. CMC said that they doubted the old computer would be able to run ok using their web site.

Anyhow, I tried and whilst it is very sightly slower loading up I have had no problems trading.

Dave:- In view of our 1st contact re XAAR some ? 18m ago results on Wednesday could be interesting in view of prior profit warnings and move of manufacturing to Sweden? Any long term views at this stage? I suspect that the results will need VERY careful study.
Best wishes to all for a successful week. Long SHP from Thursday.

well good day traders

me i will wait to see which way we are going as the bears last week were not strong to push the bulls to 5000 and on friday the bulls did not want to push the bulls higher dead lock.so we need the news to push one way or the other with gsk, barc, bp llodys.being a controling force on the 100 this may well be the good or bad news that will end this checkmate.still short rbos been on this for 6 weeks on and off and had over 200 points from it and short vod short vod,blt ngg, bnlz, closed all longs on friday.

Afternoon/morning all (depending on when read)

I was looking at the nasdaq site yesterday and have come across this useful free software tool here

Esentially it is a 20 minute delayed charting and price tool from the nasdaq site, at first glance it appears to be a stable 32 bit programe that gives much more information on stocks or tickers than is usually easily available on the nasdaq site. Its a 3 meg download but IMHO its well worth it.

David mentioned NTL (nasdaq ticker nli) above. It closed up 38%.

I wonder what (if anything) this may affect telewest.
