Syngenta can't escape its secrets
Paraquat ties to Parkinson’s disease featured on Al Jazeera news

Evidence tying the popular weed killer paraquat to Parkinson’s disease is featured this week in an online news segment that includes fresh details about corporate influence over US regulators and suppression of scientific research. The piece includes some explosive comments from a former EPA scientist about regulatory corruption.

Al Jazeera’s investigative show Fault Lines highlights the reporting of The New Lede (TNL) and the thousands of internal corporate documents obtained by TNL that reveal decades of efforts by Syngenta, paraquat’s longtime manufacturer, to conceal evidence of how chronic exposure to paraquat can cause Parkinson’s disease.

Notably, the Fault Lines segment airs a first-ever interview with retired EPA scientist Karen McCormack, who worked at the EPA for 40 years before retiring in 2018. McCormack says on camera that the EPA is not fulfilling its mission.

Reshaping agriculture?

While Ginkgo Bioworks has been working with Bayer, Corteva and Sumitomo for some years, it has jot released any commercial products. However, it is noted that the science and technology in synthetic biology are increasingly turning seemingly impossible technical achievements into commercial products. In fact, there its is now claimed that synthetic biology will help reshape agriculture in the same scale as what GMO has done over the past decades, while tech companies involved in synthetic biology will gain increased attention. It is a brand-new and fast-growing racing track with unlimited potentials, which may facilitate the achievement of the real sustainable development of agriculture.

My view is that Eden is a product development company and others will do the selling e.g. Corteva

In my opinion, Eden's role has been to create a 'bio' product that hopefully others want to sell. What has more recently been demonstrated is that regulators want to see more bio products for them to approve and also that companies will likely want to develop products with Eden, that is what has happened with Corteva. So Eden is starting to work in harmony with companies needs, rather than just trying to create a product. That delivers a totally different outcome, doesn't it and puts Eden in a very strong position with their commercial negotiations.

As regards time, the below is still the current status on Syngenta's website, so the other big Ag companies will be the same

"Protecting crops means investing significantly in research and development. We don’t find active ingredients by chance. We design them and it can take 8 to 10 years to reach commercial launch."

hxxps://www.syngenta.com/en/protecting-crops

Much quicker to come to Eden with proven AI's, regulated across the world which will save big Ag product development time, product development cost, comes with a bio profile, more acceptable to regulators, quicker to approve.

Who knows, when Californian approval for Mevalone is out, EUA for Ecovelex is agreed (hopefully) and the insecticide partner(s) is agreed with regulatory papers submitted, some of those large Ag companies might very well look at Eden and think WOW. What they do about WOW, if anything, we'll have to wait and see.

Chrischas - I think everyone, including Eden themselves have underestimated how slow the regulators are and the length of time and effort it takes to bring a product to market and to expand the label(s). I include myself in that too - however; other companies trying to produce similar products are also battling against the same timelines and same regulators.

I believe Eden are at least ahead of the competition in terms of timelines. Remains to be seen if and when others join the market with suitable / comparable products how they measure up. The tide is turning however, with Ecovelux hopefully soon to be entering the market with emergency approval (should it be granted) and a new insecticide hot on its heels.

My point is that timewise the window is shrinking. The window now is huge but Eden has never demonstrated that they can respond :always late in my opinion.

Hmm Chrischas, I guess so.
After all Eden has essentially had their actives and the delivery system for nigh on 10 years. The "others" probably have loads of products all ready to launch.
Then again, maybe not?
According to the Board, the only bird repellent on the market is Korit - a toxic substance that can kill humans (on the label). So Corteva (not many bigger) thinks Ecovelex is a game-changer and has invested a substantial amount both in its development and in the early marketing.
It is not just the Board and Corteva that think ecovelex is a game-changer, people in the industry also share that view.
We can see how long it takes for the "others" to develop an organic bird repellent.

The Board continue to include in all their RNSs that their delivery system is "one of the only" (I guess that means only) ready to use delivery systems that is microplastic free. Something that is increasingly being recognised as crucial for Ag Chem companies going forward.

Much more can be said/written about Eden than the above few words - but if one has a pre-disposition to the contrary view, then more words are unlikely to alter that view.

I don't think the window of opportunity is small.

That is my assessment.

So has Eden got a small closing window ?
That seems to be the reality. The others will catch up through innovation faster than the company manage to take the market

Corteva Launches Corteva Biologicals At Biostimulants World Congress
December 5, 2023.

Corteva Agriscience has launched Corteva Biologicals, announced at last week’s Biostimulants World Congress in Milan, Italy.

Raphael Godinho, commercial director, EMEA, Corteva Biologicals, said biologicals is a rapidly growing market, and posits that in the next 10 to 15 years, it will be three times the size of the market today.

“This is a very exciting moment for us in Corteva Biologicals,” noted Godinho. “As you can see in our stand, we are announcing the three companies together, Symborg, Stoller and Corteva as one company focusing on the biologicals market and the biostimulants market. We’re putting the teams together, announcing our technologies together, and we have a chance to share a little bit about our business model going forward, where we really have a dedicated organization focused on demand generation, [with] farmers at the centre. I see a lot of excitement from our teams, but also from all stakeholders we have around.”

Godinho said the Biostimulants World Congress was a good place to make the announcement, due to the sheer size of the event.

“I think it’s a great event to meet partners, to meet people from the industry and also to have an opportunity to exchange [ideas] about new technologies, where the market’s heading, and [to] create business opportunities as well, not only for this year but also for the future,” he said.

“One thing that caught my attention is that we have companies from many places in the world and we as a global company, Corteva Biologicals, really value this opportunity as well.”

Godinho said the industry needs to consider what the challenges and the limitations are that need to be overcome. But he stressed that farmers today are becoming more observant about these types of technologies, especially biostimulants and also bioncontrol. And that it is possible to introduce and launch these new technologies, in conjunction or in collaboration with other technologies.

“That’s the differentiation from Corteva,” he noted. “For us, being a very strong company in seeds, crop protection, digital and biologicals, we can complete a broad range of solutions to the farmers to help them to increase their production in a more sustainable way.”

Eden have been going for nearly 30 years. The share price is on the floor, the directors are milking the company and sales are negligible. If a buyout was on the cards, it should have happened already. I am glad to be out of this appalling company. It may eventually do well, but what will drive a tick up is far from clear.

I find the back and forth invective here rather tiring; in due course we will find out whether investing's prophecy of breakeven in twelve months comes to pass. The real news, it it comes, will be only party in the new label extensions and regulatory permissions; those can be media managed to sound a lot more important that they actually are, if this is to be taken seriously as a business. Of much more significance is the visible and significant snowballing of sales towards that end point.
