London shares strong, near highs midday, fresh Wall Street jump expected

Leading shares held strong gains at midday, just easing back
from an earlier peak, with expectations for another advance today on Wall Street after three straight sessions of gains keeping up the positive momentum, dealers said.

At 12.15 pm the FTSE 100 index was 123.6 points higher at 4,055.2, just
below its late morning peak at 4,063.1.

All the broader FTSE indices also sported strong gains.

Volume, however, remained modest, with 1.1 bln shares changing hands in
67,634 transactions.

After yesterday's resilient performance in New York, early indications are
that Wall Street will continue its upward trend this afternoon, with the DJIA indicated around 120 points higher -- recapturing the key 8,000 level -- and the Nasdaq up a further 19 points.

The first of the day's key US corporate earnings news added to the bright
sentiment, with banking giant Citigroup topping, albeit reduced, Q3 estimates.

Later today results from General Motors and Johnson & Johnson will also need
digesting, and after-hours figures from Intel and Motorola will be key.

No UK economic data is scheduled for release today, and this morning's UK
inflation figures proved reassuring.

RPI-X data came in slightly above expectations in September at 2.1 pct on an
annual basis, according to figures released by National Statistics.

Analysts polled by AFX News had been anticipating a 2.0 pct increase, well
short of the 2.5 pct target the government has set the Bank of England. In
August, the annual rate was at 1.9 pct.

U.S. Stocks Rise in Europe as Citigroup Profit Tops Forecasts; Intel Gains
By Ben Richardson

London, Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks rose in Europe as Citigroup Inc. said third-quarter profit topped analysts' forecasts. Intel Corp., General Motors Corp. and Motorola Inc., which are scheduled to report on earnings today, advanced.

Rising U.S. stock futures damped demand for fixed-income assets, while boosting demand for the dollar.

December futures on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index added 14.30 to 855.90 as of 11:30 a.m. London time. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures climbed 127 to 7985, and Nasdaq-100 Index futures gained 19.50 to 927.

``The market is building momentum,'' said Nicolo Nunziata, who helps manage 2 billion euros ($2 billion) of global assets at Banca Profilo in Milan. ``Earnings may give positive surprises. Long-term, it's the time to buy.''

About a third of S&P 500 members will publish earnings statements this week.

Citigroup gained $1.16 to $31.47 in Germany. The world's largest financial-services company said profit in the third quarter climbed 23 percent to 76 cents a share, more than the average estimate from analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call

Intel, the world's biggest semiconductor maker, added 62 cents to $15.72 in Germany. Analysts polled by First Call expect the company to say third-quarter profit, before certain costs, was 13 cents a share on sales of $6.52 billion. Intel said last month sales would be $6.3 billion to $6.7 billion.

General Motors, Motorola

General Motors, the largest auto manufacturer, climbed 86 cents to $34.12 in Germany. Excluding a writedown of the value of a $2.4 billion investment in Italy's Fiat auto, and including results from its Hughes Electronics Corp. unit, the company may have made 99 cents a share in the third quarter, according to analysts surveyed by First Call.

Motorola, the No. 2 maker of mobile phones, rose 37 cents to $10.47 in Germany. The company, which will report after regular trading ends, had its biggest-ever loss in the second quarter and in July predicted third-quarter net income of 2 cents a share and fourth-quarter earnings of 10 cents.

Unisys Corp. rose $1.18, or 17 percent, to $7.94 in Germany. After exchanges closed, the seller of business computers and related services said net income almost tripled in the third quarter because of cost-cutting.

The 4 3/8 percent note due in August 2012 fell 23/32, or $7.19 per $1,000 face amount, to 104 1/32. Its yield rose 9 basis points to 3.85 percent, the highest since Sept. 16. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

Dollar Gains

The dollar strengthened to 98.27 cents per euro, from 98.62 late yesterday. That pared its decline against Europe's common currency to 1.1 percent in the last month.

The strength in the dollar ``has coincided with a more buoyant stock market,'' said Rod Davidson, who oversees 30 billion pounds ($46.5 billion) as global head of fixed income at Aberdeen Asset Management Ltd. ``There's a relief rally in stocks under way,'' and the flow of funds to the U.S. has bolstered the dollar.

Any gains in the dollar probably are limited because recent U.S. economic data has been disappointing and the Bali bombing brings war with Iraq closer, damping the appeal of stocks, he said.

The S&P 500 climbed 0.7 percent to 841.44 yesterday, with drugmakers contributing half the gain. The Dow added 0.4 percent to 7877.40, and the Nasdaq Composite Index gained 0.8 percent to 1220.53.

I agree mate. Today is the day to get in. I didn't really wanna say it, but Friday should be a better close. I really would like to see 45p.

There are now however, certain indicators suggesting that this may not happen. We'll have to sit tight mate.

Morning Arpy. I've been following the above chart. So far the pattern has been true.

Large drop, followed by 2 days of rising, followed by 2 days (today is the second day) of a very slight (or even flat) drop, followed by a nice rise (looks around 10% from last time)

I belive though you have to be in today to take advantage of the rise tomorrow...

If the pattern remains true the we should gap upto keep in line with the US higer closing price tonight.

Who knows eh??? So far I think the last 6 days have followed true that's all I know. Will be watching the US with eagerness this afternoon for direction.

Market sentiment seems to be on the turn. The UK has gone through 4000, maybe the US might try 8000.

BB

ps, as usual all imo....dyor etc..

Sitting vert tight.

Hi mate.

As you know, anyone who gives information on charts sticks his neck out on being 100% wrong and looking a fool. But, stats and theory can still be appreciated without expectations imho.

I did say that there should be a good dip on monday/tuesday. So, i'm expecting that by Friday we'll be better off than the start of the week....

In saying that it is also likely that the price will be at about today's level by friday. I really dont want to say it - but, 45p is still on the cards in short term imho. But - i will reiterate that there is a very big chance of me being wrong so please dont rely on this information.

RSI is turning back down - so if you really work it out from the 29p mark where things started turning around - there will be a handsome gain.

Wish you have built enough AGT as it jumps up almost 20% this morning and expect to double when Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets is released next month. Of course won't go up in a straight line but with NAV of 21p+ & actual EPS 27p+ plus strong outlook I think AGT will worth over 25p short term & 35p in 2-6 months. IMHO
