The engineer dispute is Not about pay

People on here, like O'Shea, just haven't got a clue.
Do the maths, the extra hours etc amount to a 15% pay cut for engineers.
Figurers are approx.
5000 engineers on approx average £34k basic (Service only are on £31k basic)
5000 x 34,000 = 170m
15% of 170m is £25.5m a year

O'Shea is
creating a massive backlog of work to be done
dragging BG brand through the mud
alienating large swaths of current and future customers
going to lose the best and most capable engineers to competition
increase sickness levels
leave the remaining work force totally demotivated to help

All for £25m

If people here think saving £25m a year is going to transform this company after O'Shea damage then you should not be investing in shares. O'Shea is in the process of destroying BG Home Services, and some are applauding him on. Amazing!

Some people here resort to moral high ground when they cannot make a good argument. What about the other side, say the old pensioners who invest in business like CNA for retirement. Do they deserve having no income and having their capital dwindled?

Even for the CNA engineers and employees own benefit, the situation cannot continue like it has for the last few years with capital destroyed fast and continuously loss making. When it runs out of capital at all who will put up new capital seeing it has no return and it will only get destroyed?

So all sides need to work together constructively and make some sacrifice to make the business work for everyone's sake. Considering that the shareholders in this company have suffered so much so long, is it too much to ask the engineers to make some effort on their side, which will save their job in the long run and will reward them in the long run if it is made a success?

You sound like someone who's never worked at managerial level and have a thinking of its us vs them. Bottom line is centrica needs to compete in the market and has to adapt to change in market conditions. Which would require change in working practices.... accept that or find another job !!Not sure why they still stuck with BG if they think the current offer is no good?

These comments are so poignant. A once great exploration, distribution and engineering company now reduced to competing with meerkats and some investors thinking its main space heating product is 240Volt.

deutsch4 ‘It is hard enough digging up gas and then running pipelines all over the country to keep people warm and provide industry with energy.’

Do you know the first thing about the company you hold shares in? British Gas (or any supplier for that matter) does not have anything to do with the infrastructure that gets gas to your house, that’s the responsibility of National Grid.

One can argue the case from either side ad infinitum. What's the point?

If the engineers are SO badly treated then quite rightly they should move on to far greener pastures. That will then enable some young well educated prospective engineers, finding it very hard to gain employment in a very unfair world, to kick start their careers.

'Personally I think the unions are exploiting this situation by making it political'

You do realise the union have only asked for one thing? That's to cancel the threat of fire and rehire.

Not for more pay rise, not for better overtime rates, not for more holidays.
Just cancel Fire and Rehire threat and start negotiating like adults.

NOTHING TO DO WITH Socialism and communism NOR Government intervention

its to do with service and fair shares to all stakeholders

Thus far customers, shareholders and employees seem to have been the true losers

Directors and Management seem not to be adverely affected if at all

At least asset sales have and will reduce debt, pension liability and move ultimately towards
a leaner company and thereby the necessity of fewer employees

A gesture from Management would go a long way in these hard times as would one from the Union

Roll on the latter part of February hopefully giving a clearer outlook and more information regarding the possible Spirit Energy Sale

Take note - The present debate between the management and some of their staff, is all about who runs the company. It is about time the unions and the government kept out of things. It is hard enough digging up gas and then running pipelines all over the country to keep people warm and provide industry with energy. - This company is too important to the nation for these ungrateful pests to be allowed a say in running and/or pricing. Socialism and communism butt out!

'Now the unions say the investors have not lost enough and the workers have not been paid enough'

Stop making stuff up. The unions have not said that at all, it's just a poster on a BB has said that.

I'm a union member and GMB have never suggested Centrica be re-nationalised which would be a disaster. We only need to see what happened to Robin Hood utility.

BTW - Joan Gillman Has Resigned From Board, As A Non-executive Director, With Effect From 8 February 2021.

Previously Johnathan Ford stepped down As Group Chief Financial Officer and from the Board on 31 January 2021.

Both probably didn't like the way the company is being run.
