Dividends can only be paid from retained profits which implies that free cash flow has been earned.

Considering BT is investing huge amounts of money in the fibre roll out, it is a bit OTT to say that dividends are being financed from debt.

Capex year to 31.3.2023 £5307 million

Cash dividend year to 31.3.2023 £ 751 million

Free cash flow year to 31.3.2023 £1339 million

Reference should be made to BT's published accounts to check the accuracy of these figures.

You would be hard pushed to find any shares going up at the moment.
We are now in the Sept/Oct mega volatility Bermuda Triangle - I wouldn't even bother with a Life Jacket!

Dividends are effectively funded from increasing net debt,

I take your point. But we should also realise thst main wealth is now in US and the far east. Hence companies listed in US are more in favourable than European and UK companies.

I enclose below a post taken from LSE discussion board from a knowledgeable poster.

Drahi extended his holding in May with a spike in Off-Book Volumes. Off-Book Volumes are currently in an upward trajectory starting last month, and are on target to be somewhat higher than On Exchange volumes this month. Is stock being accumulated?

@isis- Good point about the herd mentality. Americans seem to be very excitable with regards to stocks which is why you see large caps that can move up or down 10-30% on earnings releases, whereas such volatility is much rarer in Europe.

I think it's the very fact that US investors aren't that bright that keeps them going. They are Herd investors and can drive up anything to anywhere.

A friend bought some AMC shares and was convinced they would go up to $500 because of the Dark Web shorting and asked me how much I thought they were worth. I said $5-$10 max because of all the debt but they still shot up to $70 as a meme stock, I don't think they sold and now they are back to $3 with a dfd share effort added of $2 making $5.

Money needs to come out of those so called magnificent 7 mega US tech companies and into beaten down old economy shares...the market set up is too skewed towards those tech companies...has the game become too easy for US punters...
