Ballot results should be in soon, then it’ll be downhill all the way. I’m feeling a yes vote in favour of industrial action is a dead cert but we shall see……

Culture secretary summons telcos over consumer crisis

Telecoms chiefs have been summoned by culture secretary Nadine Dorries over the cost-of-living crisis and Berenberg says BT (BT.A) is already ahead of rivals on ‘social tariffs’.

Analyst Carl Murdock-Smith retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and target price of 220p on the stock, which fell 2.6% to 182p on Wednesday.

Dorries, who is the secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, is believed to have met with telecoms chiefs, including at BT and Vodafone (VOD), to press them to come up with ideas for helping squeezed households. Measures are likely to include payment holidays and social tariffs, cheaper deals for customers usually on government benefits, to help struggling consumers.

Murdock-Smith said the news is expected to ‘raise some concerns’ and to ‘reignite discussions about the sustainability of the current pricing dynamics in the UK consumer telecoms market’.

However, he said changes to mass-market pricing are not likely and instead the focus will be on helping the most vulnerable.

‘BT has a strong story to tell on social tariffs, unlike some,’ he said, adding that it is only one of six broadband providers offering social tariffs.

‘Also in February, BT announced it would make its social tariff, “home essentials”, available in its stores, removing the previous need to call up or check availability online,’ he said.

(Sharecast News) - Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, may be set to stop billionaire Patrick Drahi from taking over BT through new national security laws and from building up his stake in telecommunications group. Government may also block Drahi from taking a seat on the board. The current ban under takeover rules on any attempt by the investor to launch a bid is set to expire over the coming week. The Government has until the beginning of July to decide whether it wishes to act or not. - The Financial Mail on Sunday

TOP NEWS: BT signs joint venture partnership to provide commercial 5G

Tue, 31st May 2022 13:02
Alliance News

(Alliance News) - BT Group

PLC on Tuesday said it entered a new "multi-million pound" joint venture partnership with Swedish peer Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson.

The FTSE 100 listed telecommunications firm said the companies will work together to provide commercial 5G private networks for the UK market.

BT has signed a multi-year contract with Stockholm-based Ericsson, which will enable it to sell the mobile network technology products to businesses and organisations in different sectors. These include manufacturing, defence, education, retail, healthcare, transport and logistics, it listed.

5G private networks are expected to grow at an average rate

of 40% a year between 2021 and 2028, according to a forecast BT sourced from MarketResearch.com. At this time the market will be worth USD14 billion, BT continued.

"Both BT and Ericsson believe there is significant demand from UK businesses looking to take advantage of the benefits the new technology can provide," the company said.

The deal follows BT's announcement to invest around GBP100 million over the next three years in its Division X unit to accelerate the development of customer solutions which integrate technologies like 5G, IoT, Edge Compute, Cloud and AI.

BT Group shares were trading 2.3% higher in London on Friday midday at 188.30 pence each.

XTomo, not unusual to hear as management will be looking at margins not experience (heck it might be a recent management hire that doesn’t even know them). At the end of the day they will be replaced with cheaper staff, simple as that.

When there is full fibre, they’ll just need someone who can dig a hole and handle a glue gun. Might need someone to change a fuse in the few remaining exchanges, although they could automate that. LOL
