'We already know from Sir Keir’s rush to introduce a ban on smoking in beer gardens that the nanny state will be enforced to a more oppressive level. Next, we can expect by raising duties and inventing new taxes, the bully state will truly arrive. So much for his election pledge to “tread more lightly” on people’s lives.
One of Labour’s favourite think tanks, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), published earlier this month a report calling for “new levies on unhealthy food, tobacco, vapes, gambling and alcohol” that “could raise over £10bn per year by the end of the decade”.
When it comes to imposing puritan codes of consumption, the IPPR has form, having previously advocated plain packaging for sweets, crisps and sugary drinks.
Now it justifies a new tax or levy on “unhealthy foods” to provide funds to “save our NHS” while reducing obesity – but evidence tells us it will only drive up living costs without reducing our waistlines.
The IPPR also proposes a new levy on tobacco companies to cap their profits. Well if it can be done to oil and gas businesses, why has it not been done to tobacco companies?
This time tobacco profits would face a variable levy set by government appointed auditors running the numbers.' |
BRWM also taking off :) (one of my rotations) |
Anyway, I sold out on Monday, happy with my rotation so far especially with the China stimulus news ... luxury goods like Kering (6% divi) are taking off and so is Estée Lauder lol
Will buy back when the risk reward becomes more enticing for me |
The relative performance of IMB and BATS over the last two years is interesting. IMB has won that race. Which seems counter-intuitive really. BATS has the better market share, faster growing non traditional business and yet IMB out-performs it. |
This appalling government wants to cap profits on tobacco companies the way it did with oil companies I read yesterday, trying to find the article ... they want to impose a further sin tax on tobacco the m+therfuc+ers
WORST GOVERNMENT IN MY LIFETIME BY MILES! |
Now ex div we may be a bit shaky leading up to budget, see what Reeves does with taxation if anything on tobacco or vaping tax. |
Must admit bliming good income every 3 months ? |
Yep and the next 3 month countdown starts right now!!
Good luck all 👍🏻 |
58.88p in the isa tax free bag. |
Oscillators (RSI and fast stochastic) come off highs and now making lows (in charts at top of thread) Could be a good setup for another rally sometime after goes ex-div. |
Is it ex div today ? |
lol yes, I research every newspaper on articles about shares I own. This exclusive happens to be in that particular newspaper. |
I would have thought that may not be such a bad thing potentially from what the CEO wants i.e. stop selling to children and putting barriers to entry in place. It might tighten up the competition and BAT would be in prime position to take advantage of that. Don't think they can make regulation on marketing any tighter. It already is i.e not allowed to promote any vapes currently. It depends how far they go with it. I wouldn't be too concerned with the report. |
hit the fast foods hard and save the health of all the young people plus make billions for the exchecker.. |
Monetyhedge you must be a complete moron if you can even read the sun |
Seems Labour going to hit vapes. Nanny state at it again.https://www.thesun.co.uk/health/30643367/smoking-vaping-ban-wes-streeting-health/ |
Last day before XD tomorrow and see where we end up with another 58.88 pence in the pot..
#Boatman123, Dec23-May24 does now look like an excellent time to have built this position, keep them for a decade and see what it owes you on a total return basis, but most likely next to nothing.. :o) |
Been accumulating since 2009 @16.70 Admittedly I sold half @46.00 but bought back at half price. It’s very unlike me to sell any of my shares. Just collect divis. |
I certainly won't be selling , I got all mine in the £22-£23 range , luckily for me , and the divi will be my main source of income , I'm in here for the long term now |
In my opinion the hardest thing to do is sell. Each of us have to make our own personal decisions and we all have different strategies etc. I will be holding and reinvesting the divis as I can see this going up further in the medium to long term. Of course one could take a profit and hope to re-enter at a more favourable price especially after the recent good run. It's a personal choice. With the pound doing so good against the dollar that is also a negative here. Who knows. |
If it drifts lower reinvest the divi it will all come good |
Remember juicy divis every quarter. I am happy the hold (but not buying any more as do not want to be too overweight) |
I am in the same boat as you. Personally, I am holding fast here and hoping to ride out any short term retrace. |
It's hard to call making a great profit do I hold for the dividend or take profit before, I just feel ex dividend shares will drift below 2800p. |
