Coronavirus: UK expected to move to 'delay' phase

The government is set to announce on Thursday that it is stepping up its response to the coronavirus.

The UK is expected to move from the "containment" phase of the outbreak to "delay" at the government's emergency Cobra committee.

"Containment" aims to halt the spread of the disease but "delay" seeks to slow its progression.

It comes after the World Health Organization labelled the outbreak of the disease a pandemic.

Earlier, a cabinet minister, who the BBC is not naming, and health minister Edward Argar were confirmed as being in self-isolation after coming into contact with Conservative colleague Nadine Dorries, who has tested positive for the virus.

If they could produce a home test kit, they could charge £20 each and probably sell at least a billion of them around the world. I don't think it will happen as all I've read is they've had 'discussions' about it. If there was a realistic chance of it happening, they wouldn't be discussing - they'd be throwing the kitchen sink at it.

Has anyone bothered to look where the research (or not) is taking place for our "testing kit" ?

UK government is increasing number of tests significantly, BATM needs to get its testing pack in front of the NHS decision makers. IMO the statistics we are seeing about covid19 lack credibility. I don't believe the fatality % as I think there are thousands more people with the virus but we are'nt aware because they have not been tested. I suspect there are thousands of people going about their daily lives with a cough not realising they have covid19. If BATM could make it a home test kit we could all be given one and do our own test so the statistics would tell a true story and those who need help could be targetted by the NHS. I'd see the test kit like a thermometer where you could test yourself every day and self isolate if necessary.

Some people have wondered why BATM was at 700p a share back 20 years ago prior to the 10:1 share split and what happened. Interesting article which parallels the situation.

BATM Telco soared on the back of the Photonic switch. This is technology that is now considered cutting edge 20 years later. The technology was abandoned at the time due to the fall out from the dotcom bubble as hard pressed providers did not have the resources to go with the more advanced but more expensive solution.

The second BATM collapse happened through no fault of their own as Nokia their main client (despite BATM warnings) were wrong footed by smart phones and apple iphone dominance.

Fast forward and BATM are once again sitting with some impressive IP and the markets perhaps are wondering what could go wrong this time around. I think its fair to say that the company is far better placed to keep its technology under its control and develop with a cautious set of partnerships.
I agree with Simon Thompson assessment of the sum of the parts in his recent update.

BATM Advanced Communications (BVC:41.5p), a provider of medical laboratory systems, cyber security and network solutions with extensive operations in Israel, has successfully developed a new diagnostics kit to detect COVID-19.

The kit has undergone testing by several central laboratories and hospitals that have now verified its ability to diagnose the virus. BATM has commenced production at its Adaltis facility in Rome and is working with academic and research institutions, mainly in Europe, to progress the product to make it at a price point suitable for large scale commercial production. Importantly, it supports all the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations, and has received interest from customers in several countries. The kit can be used with the company’s diagnostic instruments and also with some competing diagnostic instruments.

It’s worth noting, too, that BATM holds a valuable 38 per cent stake in Ador Diagnostics, a company that is developing a new molecular diagnostic bench-top analyser that is able to probe 100 targets in a single proprietary carbon array, or 16 times more than existing products on the market. It is being targeted at screening for hospital-acquired infections such as MRSA and C. Diff, and to identify tropical infections in travellers returning home with fevers. Ador has received its first commercial order (for the identification of meningitis) from a leading Italian distributor of molecular and genomics products. It will be delivered in the second half of this year. COVID-19 is now included within the heavily patented Ador suite of testing kits, thus further enhancing its appeal.

The news adds further shine to BATM’s annual results which revealed a doubling of operating profit to US$5.3m on 3 per cent higher revenue of US$123m, buoyed by a barn storming second half that led to a substantial order backlog for 2020. The order flow has been strong since the year-end, too. BATM has announced a US$4m follow-on contract to an [undisclosed] government for additional hardware and software cyber security products.

The company has also won a US$1.3m contract for the supply and installation of its patented agri-waste treatment solution. The customer produces and distributes high quality fresh and frozen chicken throughout the Middle East, where it is based, as well as several countries in Asia. BATM won a US$4m contract award from a Taiwanese agri-food conglomerate at the end of last year, too. Demand for the solution can only increase following the outbreak of COVID-19 given that BATM’s proprietary solution enables the treatment of poultry remains onsite, and removes the environmental hazards associated with transporting them without the use of any harmful materials, chemicals or methods.

The shares have produced a total return of 129 per cent since I included them in my 2017 Bargain Shares Portfolio. I maintain my sum-of-the-parts valuation of £264m (60p a share) after factoring in BATM’s net cash of $44.8m (£34.7m); read-through valuations for the stakes in Ador (£17.2m) and Adaltis (£45m); property assets worth $16m (£12.4m); valuing BATM’s networking and cyber security division at $106m (£82m), or 20 times its 2019 operating profit of US$5.2m; and taking into account the value embedded in BATM’s partnership with Arm Holdings, and the group’s biomedical division, both of which are commercialising valuable IP. Thanks Wizz. OPKO shares almost doubled in price when they announced their kit last week. Wonder why BATM isn't seeing the same effect - I wasn't expecting BATM to double but I certainly wasn't expecting a drop.

I still don't understand why they're doing the tests for 22p. If they charged £1 per test, nearly 5 times more, they'd be viewed as profiteering? If it was an existing test with plenty of supply, and they chose to bump up the price or limit supply's then that would be unethical profiteering. But they're a business, this is a new product and there is limited supply.
I've done a quick search for what the current test costs are (not easy as there's so many reports of US healthcare rip offs)and the best I could find is this:

Michigan

...The state added that it has ordered a test kit from an undisclosed commercial vendor, but has not received it yet. “We have ordered a test kit from a private vendor and will be working through the validation process once we receive it,” a spokesperson said. “If the validation process is successful, we will provide our results to CDC/FDA for approval to use the kit for COVID-19 testing.” Each commercial kit costs $234 per 500 reactions, they said.

Which is around 36p per test. Wonder if this is BATM.

There should be major benefit to BVC from the coronavirus outbreak over and above just the revenues from testing for it this year.

Mass provision of its testing kit will give the company unparalleled exposure and publicity, of the best kind as it won't be seen to be profiteering, which could be invaluable going forward in generating ongoing business.

And it will be a wake up call to the world of the importance of employing the type of quality bio-medical and bio-waste solutions provided by BVC:

" ... "We believe that the strategy we adopted in both of our divisions is proving to be correct. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the value of solutions that help with the containment of infectious disease outbreaks. Consequently, we believe that combination of our NATlab system, which can identify human pathogens with unparalleled speed and accuracy, with our Eco-Med products for pathogenic waste treatment, stand to be of great benefit to society. At the same time, our Networking business is accelerating the NFV activity and we expect good commercial traction in 2020. As a result, we continue to look to the future with confidence." ..."

SB,

The UK is under one per cent of the world's population, and people will be repeat-tested.

And I don't think that there is a lot of effective competition. On the contrary, existing testing is unreliable, and people have been paying up to $1,000 per test.

In addition, as FSE has just reminded us, the coronavirus outbreak should also stimulate demand for BVC's large agricultural waste sterilizers:

I'm in on this since last week and so far down 5%. They claim the new test will be priced at 1 NIS - which is 22p. So you could test every person on the UK for £14.5 million. And there seems to be a lot of competition in the tests area. Not sure there's a lot of profit in this?

Reported March 2nd.... "......The Jerusalem Post that compared to the kit that is currently used by hospitals all over the world, BATM’s product is faster and more accurate, and within a few weeks, the company aims to set the cost at approximately NIS 1 per test. The kit is expected to receive the EU’s CE certification mark next week."

Edit: So maybe we will hear something next week.
The large agricultural waste sterilizers are starting to really make sense against a backdrop that contaminated carcas and contaminated feed from processed meat is responsible for so many outbreaks....

Nice to finish blue today after five consecutive down days ... and on a very bad day for the markets too.

This bodes well for the next leg up, after the profit-taking following the coronavirus test RNS.

And lets see if there is any weekend press coverage.

Seeing as the test kit BATM have can be used with equipment already in labs, I see them getting a few huge contracts.
The contacts they around the world and close ties between Israel US they are in a strong position."

The fact that BATM is an Israeli company should be helpful in making fast progress with the US government:

"Established in 1992, BATM is headquartered in Israel with offices in North America, Europe and the Far East, and it is listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange."

In addition, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will lift existing restrictions on tests and provide new guidelines for speeding up exams for those who fear they are infected.
But some question how this promise will be kept, as public health laboratories insist their capacity for processing the tests is restricted.
There is also a question of cost, amid reports of uninsured Americans paying upwards of $1,000 (£780) for a test. The US House of Representatives approved $8.3bn in emergency aid on Wednesday to combat the coronavirus.

Added comment. In light of this I e mailed this to the BBC on "haveyoursay".
