ABI: network function virtualization market to reach total $38 billion by 2022
May 25, 2017 Sabrina Labanowski

The Network Function Virtualization (NFV) market will generate revenues of some $38 billion in 2022, according to a report by ABI Research.

The analysts said that after a slower start than initially anticipated the NFV market will experience moderate growth spurred by ongoing investments by major telcos.

The report states that North America will lead the market, accumulating $13 billion in NFV-related investments during 2022. Europe will experience the highest growth rate at an estimated 53 percent CAGR between 2017 and 2022.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) market

The research company said that spending on hardware, including servers, storage devices, and switches, would decline over time. At the same time, software and services will show higher growth rates of 55% and 50%, respectively.

The authors said that despite the fact, that the market is evolving and technical expertise is starting to mature, the standardization and multi-vendor involvement challenges would remain stagnant for the next couple of years.

They added that software and services vendors would have opportunities to identify NFV use-cases in enterprise verticals and use these to offer end-to-end integrated systems.

ABI said that the market experienced in 2015 and 2016 some early successes but mostly reconsiderations and failures with NFV.

“Early adopters conducted proof of concept testing and NFV-integrated system demonstrations with the aim to understand the true impact of NFV in the technical, operational, and cultural domains,” said Neha Pachade, Senior Analyst at ABI Research.

“Our forecasts indicate that NFV will become a sizeable opportunity for vendors, although it is not yet clear whether it will cannibalize existing hardware-based product lines or create new market use cases,” added Pachade.

SD-WAN is the “Killer App” for NFV Services

May 10, 2017

I’ve just returned from attending Layer123’s NFV World Congress 2017 in San Jose, an energetic and engaging 3-day conference with a focus on NFV technology, solutions and services. It was exciting to see how strong the interest and buzz is around SD-WAN. As one tier 1 service provider speaker in their presentation noted, “SD-WAN is the Killer App for NFV.”

I couldn’t agree more with this simple assertion about SD-WAN, which continues to be one the most-talked about VNF use cases being deployed globally today. SD-WAN as a VNF on vCPE was a central theme throughout the presentations in the “SD-WAN and Business” track, including speakers from service providers, networking vendors, system integrators, industry analysts and semiconductor vendors.

In fact, Telco Systems and Silver Peak announced an Open vCPE solution for SD-WAN that enables service providers to select a best-in-class vCPE platform with a best-in-class SD-WAN VNF that easily integrates into a service provider’s NFV infrastructure.

The new joint SD-WAN vCPE solution enables service providers to quickly bring new tiered, high-performance, virtualized services to market. This open solution also enables telcos and managed service providers to deliver on the ultimate promise of NFV to be an agile, open and flexible service delivery platform that supports any VNF service in parallel to or as part of a service chain with SD-WAN services.

What is even more impressive, is that many of the vCPE vendor speakers also acknowledged that SD-WAN VNFs are driving more demand for their vCPE solutions and proof-of-concept projects. Service providers can deploy an EdgeConnect SD-WAN VNF on their choice of vCPE platforms from any of our partners that include: Juniper Networks, Telco Systems, Ciena, or ADVA.

IHS analyst, Michael Howard, validated this trend by noting in his keynote that SD-WAN and vCPE are the highest priority NFV services based on a recent survey of service providers from 35 companies.

NFV World Congress 2017During the SD-WAN track, I presented “SD-WAN-Monetizing a New Generation of Cloud-enabled Services” which covered examples of how service providers can leverage SD-WAN to create value-added service tiers. An SD-WAN solution that enables tiered services provides exactly the kind of flexibility service providers are seeking as they build and execute their managed SD-WAN and virtualized service strategies.

Service providers that visited our booth viewed a live demo of our Silver Peak Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN solution and were also impressed with our ability to integrate an optional WAN optimization performance pack, Unity Boost, into the solution. It is faster and easier for service providers to integrate an SD-WAN vendor solution that can support a SD-WAN VNFs and a WAN optimization VNF on the same SD-WAN platform as part of a virtualized managed services strategy.
The Value of Tiered WAN Services

The Value of Tiered WAN Services – click to see full size

Offering tiered, managed SD-WAN services, enables service providers to quickly drive new routes to monetize connectivity and optimize application performance across any WAN environment. The Silver Peak Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN solution can serve as a foundation for service providers to capitalize on these new business opportunities and deliver new tiered managed SD-WAN services.

Telco Systems and Silver Peak Offer vCPE for SD-WAN
Wyatt Carlson
May 1, 2017
10:30 am PT

Carrier Ethernet provider Telco Systems and software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) vendor Silver Peak today rolled out a joint virtual CPE (vCPE) system for managed SD-WAN services. The goal is to enable telcos and service providers to offer new virtualized services.

The combined product integrates the Silver Peak Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN system with Telco Systems’ Verge platform. Verge is a plug-in vCPE based on standard x86 servers, and it provides a virtualized environment for Silver Peak’s SD-WAN to run on, said Ariel Efrati, CEO of Telco Systems.

“Our vCPE provides an OS that has the ability to take an x86 and extract more juice out of it,” Efrati said. “We can take a low-power device and turn it into a high-performance networking device by adding virtualization.”

The platform supports any virtual network function (VNF) service in conjunction with or as part of a service chain with SD-WAN services. This eliminates the need to deploy standalone appliances on the customer’s premise for each service.

The joint solution is also able to include third-party functions like virtual firewalls and virtual service level agreement (SLA) probes drawn from both companies’ VNF partner programs. Services from partner companies like Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, Check Point, and Riverbed can be integrated onto the joint platform, according to Efrati.

Users can now remotely add on additional VNF-based network services at any time. Telco Systems’ environment also allows providers and telcos to try out different services and subscription models as they grow.

Silver Peak’s EdgeConnect is a multi-tenant SD-WAN product that provides virtual overlays to connect users to applications using any combination of MPLS, broadband, and LTE transport services. Using a Silver Peak orchestrator, enterprises can configure policies for services and applications from any branch location.

Neptune: Israeli Networking Consortium Conducts Pioneering SDN/NFV Demonstration
[Business Wire]
Business WireApril 6, 2017

PETAH TIKVA, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Neptune, the Israeli Consortium for Network Programming, has announced that it has recently performed a general demonstration of its pioneering technologies.

The demonstration was an expression of Neptune’s mission – to build on the software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) technologies currently being developed by global standards development organizations, industry specification groups and open source communities. In particular, Neptune strives to dramatically reduce the time required to deploy new services and even completely new service types, to enable more efficient exploitation of network and computational resources, and facilitate faster and more intelligent response to network events. Neptune achieves these objectives through research undertaken by special teams assembled by its member organizations.

Four Global Firsts

What gave this demonstration special significance was that it included four global firsts. It was the world’s first multi-vendor vCPE demonstration, in which a single service provider OpenStack controller established end-to-end services terminating on virtual customer premises equipment (vCPEs) from three different vendors – ADVA Optical Networks, Telco Systems (BATM Group) and RAD. Everything was run on top of Mellanox switch and HCA adaptor. Satellite network vendor Gilat Satellite Networks, moreover, became the first to demonstrate vCPE capabilities in a satellite ground segment gateway. The demonstration also incorporated the world’s first integration of tactical mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) UHF radio networks into an SDN and NFV-based multi-vendor heterogeneous virtual Radio Access Network (vRAN), a technology developed by Elbit Systems Land and C4i. Additionally it featured Open Mobile Edge Cloud (OMEC) with the world’s first completely virtual cellular base station (from modem to management) developed by ASOCS, accelerated by a pool of network attached programmable hardware accelerators.

In addition, the Neptune demonstration showcased the transport of the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) standard over microwave by Ceragon Networks. ECI Telecom demonstrated how its multilayer service app performs fast recovery from optical-layer faults using an ONOS controller combined with OpenFlow optical extensions. Satellite edge computing for factor-of-20 throughput improvement was shown by Gilat Satellite Networks, and ADVA presented Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) for enterprise services.

The demonstration was conducted in the premises of Bezeq International, supported by equipment located at four other sites. Present were the outgoing Chief Scientist of the Israel Ministry of Economy and Industry, Avi Hasson, the head of the Chief Scientist’s technological infrastructure division, Ilan Peled, Neptune chair Dr. Yaakov Stein, and representatives of each consortium member.

“Tighter financial restrictions along with the dynamicity of today’s networks are steering service providers to adopt ever more efficient, automated, and service-aware networks,” Stein explained. “This necessitates totally new network architectures that enable the fast creation of new services, simplified network management, and real time network optimization while maintaining or even reducing service provider CapEx and OpEx,” he added. ”Our demonstration represents a major step in bringing all these advantages of networking programming to service providers worldwide.”

“The Neptune Consortium propels Israeli industry into a new era in which communication networks will be programmed, existing services can be easily modified and new services may be introduced quickly.” Peled concluded. “The collaboration between member companies, as well as between them and breakthrough research groups, shortens time-to-market, maximizes resources and establishes the entire Neptune Consortium at the forefront of these leading edge technologies.”

About the Neptune Consortium

The Neptune Consortium was founded in 2014 to develop efficient methods to automate and programmatically manage service provider networks, irrespective of their underlying network technologies. Basic to achieve this goal are SDN and NFV. Backed by the Israel Innovations Authority (previously the Office of the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Economy and Industry), the consortium includes the country’s leading communications innovators: ADVA Optical Networking Israel, ASOCS, Bezeq International, Ceragon Networks, ECI Telecom, Elbit Systems, Gilat Satellite Networks, Mellanox Technologies, RAD, and Telco Systems (BATM Group); and research institutions: Ariel University, Ben-Gurion University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Holon Technological Institute, the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya, the Lev Academic Center in Jerusalem, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and Tel Aviv University.

Disruptive technologies – The telco world moves between hope and fear
April 6, 2017 Sabrina Labanowski

While telecommunication companies wish to expand the usage of disruptive technologies, they are concerned and confused over the implications arising from adopting them, according to a new report prepared for KPMG International by Forrester Consulting.

The report, entitled Powering a connected world disruptive technologies barometer: Telecommunications sector, is based on a survey of 580 senior telecommunications decision makers from 16 countries.

The study shows that telecom leaders are eager to use disruptive technologies to improve their products and services, reduce costs and outpace their rivals. At the same time, they are also concerned that disruptive technologies are undermining their business models and fear their businesses lack the organizational flexibility and agility to get the most out of new technology.

Telecom Disruption

The survey revealed the following:

Lack of a clear roadmap – Uncertainty concerning disruptive technologies is sweeping the sector. Telecom companies are worried that new players could usurp their traditional dominance as network providers.
Focus on customer – Telcos strive to enhance customer experience. They are keen to exploit the possibilities of the internet of things (IoT), wearables and data and analytics by tracking user behavior, adapting to needs and demands in real time and sharpening their marketing.

Selective choice – Service providers invest mainly in technologies such as IoT, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), artificial intelligence (AI) and digital currencies.
Need to adapt – The majority of telco executives (78 percent) fear their businesses lack the organizational flexibility and agility to adapt to new ways of working.

Forrester analysts conclude that the current telecom organizational model is unlikely to survive. Disruption pressures telcos to become platform companies offering a range of services from content to software and everything in between. The shifting shape of the sector is influencing every major executive decision. However, these same executives admit their organizations are not well positioned to adapt to disruptive technology.

They add that telecom companies face a two-tier challenge: they need to become internet and/or content-related organizations, while remaining custodians of networks that are safe, reliable and powerful.

To achieve these dual goals, leaders need to clarify investment strategies and prioritize disruptive technologies. They also need to master data and analytics and leverage them to their full potential. This can happen only if industry leaders are fully committed and prepared to make dramatic changes to their business and operating models.

Kenyan Provider Builds SDN Network to Support 10GE Services
Brian Santo
March 30, 2017
11:03 am PT

Telco Systems will provide Internet Solutions Kenya with a fully automated software-defined network (SDN) with the capacity to support 10 gigabit Ethernet services to its enterprise customers.

Internet Solutions Kenya is part of a larger group of companies that have operations in South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, and elsewhere in Africa. Internet Solutions Kenya has a fiber-based MPLS network now in place, providing cloud, communication, connectivity, and carrier services within Kenya and connecting outside Kenya.

Metro Ethernet pioneer Telco Systems has a multinational clientele that includes Verizon, Time Warner Cable, Bell, Telefonica, Nokia, Orange, and Ziggo, to name a few. It also already has a customer in Africa, and it happens to be in Kenya – the Kenya Education Network (Kenet).

Telco Systems prides itself on several capabilities, but among them is its ability to push MPLS-based systems to the edge and its expertise with NFV. Those will both be relevant when working with Internet Solutions Kenya.

Telco Systems will be replacing an unidentified incumbent communications supplier as it helps Internet Solutions Kenya with the upgrade to provide more bandwidth. The equipment vendor said it will provide a fully automated software-defined network with the capacity to support 10GE, using its 10G Ethernet MPLS Demarcation & Pre-Aggregation Platform and two demarcation devices.

Internet Solutions Kenya will also use Telco Systems’ EdgeGenie Orchestrator service management system. EdgeGenie is modular; different modules make use of various open source technologies, such as OpenDaylight and OpenStack, as needed to deploy and manage services.

The Kenyan operator will end up with full MPLS services across all parts of its fiber network all the way to the customer. In addition, this network upgrade will include the latest MEF 2.0 standards, which will allow Internet Solutions Kenya to deliver more robust services to its customers.

This deal may lead to a deeper relationship. “This is not the end in our engagement with them,” Telco Systems Chief Executive Ariel Efrati told SDxCentral. “We’re discussing with them a more sophisticated platform for virtualization. They will be one of the first in Africa to offer virtualized services.”

Efrati said not only does he expect the work with Internet Solutions Kenya to lead to additional business with other companies in its group, but he also thinks that business will be a springboard for business with unrelated companies on the continent.

Many African countries have already installed fiber, now they’re looking to make money from those investments, Efrati noted. “It’s a good opportunity. They can take a quantum leap. They have less legacy infrastructure to hold them down,” he said, later adding, “Everyone thinks about innovation coming from America, Europe, and so on. I think Africa has a lot to offer.”

It would appear that we have had several days trading after the results of higher than normal volumes. I suspect a large seller in the picture but it looks as if the buys have been investors and not being taken up by institutional holders.
Someone who is more skilled at watching these trades may be able to confirm or dispute this.
If true then the shift to more smaller investors would be a welcome development.
My experience of institutional holders is that they often buy and reduce not on the news but due to policy changes so they can be a fickle part of the equation.
