Barclays Africa Exit Looking Like Good Timing

Barclays investors can take comfort that the bank has cushion against further trouble in South Africa

Barclays is also making progress with its strategy. I think the decision not to raise dividends until the bank's balance sheet was stronger is a good one. It may have caused some unrest among investors at the time, but dividend growth may be on the agenda a little further down the line. I think Barclays is a relatively well-diversified bank, so I feel it may be able to cope better than some of its index peers (particularly challenger banks) should Brexit difficulties appear.

Barclays' share price has inched higher in London this morning, having added 0.13 percent to 227.60p as of 09:21 BST, largely in line with gains in the broader UK market, with the benchmark FTSE 100 index currently standing 0.08 percent higher at 7,379.61 points. The group's shares have gained just under 50 percent over the past year, as compared with about a 19-percent rise in the Footsie.Sources with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg last night that the SFO had sent letters to several former Barclays executives in the last week informing them it will decide on whether to file charges over the 2008 cash call by the end of May. The watchdog had previously told a London court that it would make a decision by the end of March.

Barclays PLC (LON:BARC) (LSE:BARC.L) has a P/E of 17.8 using 2016's EPS. In my view, this can be justified by investors because of the double-digit EPS growth forecast in FY2017 and FY2018. Barclays has a strategy which I believe could be good news for its share price. I like its continued focus on financial strength and in reorganising the bank in order to become more financially flexible in the long run. I also feel the banking sector could be undervalued, which may lift the Barclays share price in the long term.

Portside - You say you've been to Shrewsbury today. We've just got back from there having celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary with 3 days touring round the area. Ludlow was very nice and we also visited Ironbridge because I wanted to see 'the bridge'. I found that a bit disappointing as I imagined it as being a lot bigger.
