S&P Says End in Sight for Writedowns on Subprime Debt (Update1)

By Emma Moody

March 13 (Bloomberg) -- Standard & Poor's said the end is in sight for writedowns by the world's largest financial institutions.

Writedowns from subprime-mortgage securities will probably rise to $285 billion, New York-based S&P said today in a report titled ``Subprime Write-Downs Could Reach $285 Billion, But Are Likely Past The Halfway Mark.''

The ratings company had previously estimated losses of $265 billion in January. S&P raised its estimate because of increased loss assumptions for collateralized debt obligations, the company said.

``The positive news is that, in our opinion, the global financial sector appears to have already disclosed the majority of valuation writedowns,'' S&P credit analyst Scott Bugie said in an accompanying statement.

nice...............

morning all.......yep all over the place mr......the key thing will be 12,000.........if DOW breaks that then Axon breaks 420.........or the other way round.......or both.........or whatever...........imo..........

Axon bounced off 420 some weeks ago back in Jan I think (DOW bounced off 12,000)......and again this week (dipped below 420 same as DOW dipped below 12,000 for 2 days).............so in some respects Axon is at the moment ebbing and flowing with the wider markets..............

at least there's no 140 point drops............

well I said they wouldn't let it stay 3 days below 12,000 and I'm right (for now).............things going very well............for a change........

have you seen all the ads for HSBC and 8% interest...........well I read this as a con...........check it out........

they give you 8% on balances upto £1000, (and just charge 8% on overdrafts I guess, but look at the wording.........."Debit Interest – you can receive 8% EAR fixed debit interest on balances up to £1,000 for 12 months from account opening, 16.1% EAR variable thereafter"

so you receive debit interest now..........blimey to the layman that's gonna read like you gonna get something.........lol.........

anyhow, for all this you only have to pay £12.95 per month............well work it out.

8% of £1000 = £80..........divide by 12 for monthly........ = £6.67........

so you pay them £12.95, you get back £6.67............

Give the marketing person who came up with that idea a massive massive bonus............lol.............

You mean when the US gets a new president? Things could improve if HC drops out and Obama gets a bit of momentum.

so, maybe some news from the fed ahead of the next meeting to help bounce it back up............0.5-0.75% cut???? or even on march 18th a full 1% cut????????????

stranger things have happened.............

;-))))))))))))))

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

just knew they wouldn't let the dow stay below 12,000 for 3 days...............could be the begining of the end of the credit crunch........say what 6-9 months and things start looking up at a guess???????

Asia Stocks Gain, Erasing Earlier Drop; Automakers, Banks Rise

By Chua Kong Ho and Darren Boey

March 11 (Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks rebounded from earlier declines, led by automakers and financial companies, amid speculation the U.S. Federal Reserve will broaden measures to bolster the world's largest economy.

Barclays went Ex-div with a generous divi so I am not surprised that went down.

Axon seem to be affected by the FUD factor and not much else. I will be glad when the US elects its new president.

Looks to me like Aegon have reduced their holding by over 100,000...not increased them. However not a lot considering their total holding but obviously enough to affect the share price in the wrong direction.
The Diector bought at 470p...probably wishes he had held on a day...but somewhat reassuring that he must think they are worth picking up at that price!.

Couldn't help wondering whether they shorted the stock prior to issuing the first downgrade, covered yesterday morning contributing to 7% morning bounce and then went long after their second downgade. This sort of thing must happen.

I mean, Wilmdav, that chartists predictions are only accurate 50% of the time and, therefore, are as useful as spinning a coin. So why not save the coloured pencils and just spin a coin? Less gravitas?

And I am not grateful for Altium's largesse. You can have their "double bottom" all to yourself.

Thanks martpow. When you see it like that it's hard to see the momentum fizzling out.

One thing is for certain, charts are no use.

What d'yer mean Jo. Altium's just given us a double bottom. You should be grateful.
