US September factory orders rise 0.2 pct on jump in non-durable goods

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - Orders to US factories rose 0.2 pct in
September as an unexpected jump in demand for non-durable goods overwhelmed a
drop in durable goods orders, the Commerce Department reported today.
There was a 2.1 pct increase in new orders for non-durables, while analysts
had been looking for an increase in the 1 pct range.
Non-durable goods orders are not broken down by category, but economists had
warned the number could be inflated by higher prices for oil and other
commodities.
Durable goods orders were down 1.7 pct in September, unrevised from the
original report last week. Based on that, forecasters were expecting a 0.4 pct
decline in total factory orders.
A 33.9 pct drop in defense orders was the principal cause of the big fall in
durables orders, but vehicle orders were also down 1.1 pct. Since that big
defense negative number also shows up in the transportation category, new orders
excluding transportation were up 1.4 pct for September.
Taking out the two big swing factors of aircraft and non-durables,
manufacturers' September order book indicated continued strength in business
capital spending. Orders for core capital goods--non-defense excluding
aircraft--rose 0.5 pct,, indicating continuing strength in business capital
investment.
Total inventories were up 0.6 pct in September. Manufacturers in the ISM
Survey released Thursday reported increasing concern about inventory
accumulation.

U.S. Stocks Drop, Led by Financial Shares; Citigroup Falls

By Eric Martin

Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks fell for a second day on concern that writedowns from credit-market losses will reduce financial companies' profits in the fourth quarter.

Citigroup Inc. dropped after Deutsche Bank AG analysts said the biggest U.S. bank may face ``greater-than-expected'' writedowns. Merrill Lynch & Co., the world's biggest brokerage, tumbled on a report that it made deals with hedge funds that may have been intended to postpone credit-market losses.

The S&P 500 decreased 9.9, or 0.7 percent, to 1,498.54 at 9:58 a.m. in New York. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 72.35, or 0.5 percent, to 13,495.52. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 12.77, or 0.5 percent, to 2,782.06. More than two stocks dropped for every one that rose. For the week, S&P 500 has lost 2.3 percent, the Dow average has retreated 2.1 percent and the Nasdaq has slipped 0.6 percent.

still quite funny though.........subprime accounts for just 8% of the whole mortgage market in the US ($700Bn) if memory serves right...........just a drop in the ocean then............so they've written of what $30bn so far maybe a bit more or less??????? amazing what a bit of spin can do...........

Barclays is a bargain today - I just helped myself to some - no reason for it to be down other than bad sentiment.

It is not a good day for any stocks today. But Monday is another day - we may well see some retracement.

Axon has stalled for the moment - it needs a kick to get it going again. Any ideas when a new RNS is due?

thankfully the reporting season is almost done and everyone can look towards the holiday season and 4th quarter expectations.............

I think everyone knew the third quarter was going to stink, however it hasn't stunk as bad as they though it would be I think...............hence the US is still sniffing around the 14,000 mark and not the 12,500 mark as per August..............

nice............
