here's a link that may be of interest re. the new viaSat Exede service. fortunately it's a US service, so shouldn't be competing directly with us.

I saw the story but wasn't sure whether it was good or bad for AVN. I don't know about the technology but the fact that the light squared project ran into trouble because of interference with other communication signals could just as easily be a potential negative for AVN, no?

looking back through the RNSs in the run-up to Hylas-1 launch I notice we didn't get much news then. the launch date (orig. 25 Nov 2010, actual 26 Nov) was only confirmed 5 weeks ahead.

however one important milestone was announced 6 months before launch (I've edited the full RNS):

RNS Number : 3904M
Avanti Communications Group Plc
24 May 2010

Avanti Communications Group plc
HYLAS 1 Progress

Avanti Communications Group plc (AIM: AVN), the broadband satellite operator, is pleased to announce that it has completed Thermal Vacuum Testing ("TVAC") on its HYLAS 1 satellite.

TVAC is the most demanding phase of satellite testing and its completion
confirms the satisfactory performance of the fully integrated satellite in
accordance with Avanti's requirements.

Commenting, David Williams, Avanti Chief Executive, said: "The on schedule completion of TVAC is a significant milestone. "

I would have expected that we might get an announcement of TVAC completion this time too.

I reckon 1204-06 means between April(04) and June(06) 2012.

Even if Arianespace can't/won't declare scheduled dates beyond the next-to-go, it might be reassuring to have had an update on the progress of the HYLAS-2 build. At some point (fairly soon I presume) they will need to have it ready and pack it up for transport to French Guiana.

Jeffian, we're a few months away from the Olympics too, but we all know exactly when thats going to start, and lets hope HYLAS2 is up before then. Greater transparency allows us to better judge the capabilities of management here. The date will also materially affect next years figures and therefore I think the information should be made public as soon as it is available.

cancun tango (7400),

A bit bemused by your comment that we need an update on the Hylas2 launch schedule. This has always been fixed at Q2/12 and the last comment was only a few days ago in the RNS on 4 January which said "We are now just a few months away from the launch of HYLAS 2 and I am pleased to note the capacity is selling well". I appreciate that we haven't got a precise date yet but how often do you want "updates"?!

i dont think that a slot has been confirmed for launch yet.

but if you have a scout around on the net, it seems that June is the month it is currently pencilled in for

Agree Yorgi, there's been good newsflow so far this year, shame the share price is languishing after all that. Seem to remember the discusson on here a few weeks ago was about the date of 12-04-06 and whether that was Apr-Jun this year or 6th April/4th June. Clarification would be welcome. Think that AVN could do better at information management (similar sentiment on the iii board this morning), and hopefully this will be one of the areas where Paul Walsh will be able to add value.

Yorgi: I think you are right. Once we get close the Hylas 2 launch it will no doubt generate lots of publicity and excitment again and I 'm very happy to wait. The Brokers targets are still £14 plus which provides plenty of upside!

We have had plenty of good confidence boosting RNS Cancun but for the time being nothing is making any difference to the share price The shorters have frightened new investors off so until we see some good numbers in the results I fear we will be hanging around here a bit longer.

I'm quite sure when the BOD have some information on the launch we will hear but it is early days yet in my view.

The dataexplorers data on 'shares on loan' is no longer available, apparently it was crashing their servers. Does anyone know where you can get free 'shares on loan' info?

Could do with an update on HYLAS2 launch schedule here. Would cost AVN nothing to put out a confidence boosting RNS with progress/confirmed launch date.

hi backmarker - yep, I might be a tad early with the bowl but it pays not to be too late too.

There's also a small pennant forming which will attract good buying when it breaks out which might enhance the turn on the chart.

There's the interims around Feb 14 (valentines day - will the market fall in love here again then?)

Directors have been buying well and Paul Walsh who has become a non-exec has taken a worthwhile stake.

Lastly there's all that short closing that has to happen - the market is turning positive imo but the bears have yet to believe it on many stocks - nothing better than a nice short squeeze to be long on :-)

My bet is these are a lot higher by the end of Feb and the year end - stuck them in my stockchallenge on that basis - the biggest fallers in a bear market often become the biggest, fastest risers when that market changes imo.

It is still important that Hylas 1 is seen to be selling capacity at the rate and values predicted, even though it needs Hylas 2 to drive it to the next level. 'On target' sales for H1 and the successful launch of H2 should kick it into action.

Recent news seems to be primarily about Hylas2. Hope we are not going to have to skip Hylas1 and wait for big action from Hylas2.
