Thanks, Brasso. Be interesting to see if it plays out. I am nearing break-even on my original 'miss-timed' purchases around the 8/9p level a long while back..

The previous bull markets were driven by speculation from retail investors. This time round large investors and institutions are getting involved (eg Grayscale).

BTC has tended to move in 4 year cycles around the 4 year halving events. 2017 was the last bull run so 2021 should be where the big gains are. Check out the S2F model from Plan B:-

What's that cyclical expectation based on - is it the same argument as for precious metals, or something different?

BTC is expected to peak around August 2021 and then go into another 2 year bear cycle. It therefore make sense for further expansion of the mining capacity this year then reap the rewards of higher prices in 2021.

Yes, also agree re: cash reserves.

Possibly the trickiest thing is balancing the purchase/life of new machines with the speed the processing efficiency grows at with the technology constantly moving forward. Buy too many new machines and you haven't the cash to invest in the next models, when available, but sit on your hands too much and you don't make your money work hard enough.

Is there much of a 2nd hand market for older machines to be flogged for upgrading?

Agreed. However if you are in the Bitcoin 'game' you should be very much against fiat currencies so it does not make sense to have too much cash reserves. I expect they should have a strategy where they hold a 20:80 cash to BTC ratio in reserves. Investment in new machinery and potentially dividends to share holders would also have to fit in there.

Depends whether the BTC are better cashed in ASAP to buy more mining machines, to produce more BTC, to have even more BTC in the 'bank' if/when the price reaches $50k?

Probably a happy compromise to be found somewhere between continued scaling up growth, storing BTC and paying dividends..

I will be interested to see how the strategy changes with ARB as BTC rises. Once they have built up a reasonable cash buffer (say $4m - $8m) it then makes sense to hold more significant BTC reserves. Sitting on ~500 bitcoin when the price rises to $50k in 2021 would be worth around $25m.
