Anglo American's Investment Case Is Compelling Despite 2022 Operational Issues

0952 GMT - Anglo American delivered a strong 4Q result as it met its full-year production targets and backed its 2023 production and cost guidance, analysts at Jefferies say in a note. Diamond, copper, coal and manganese production for the year rose, but platinum group metals production fell due to lower grades and planned infrastructure closures, as did iron ore, and nickel, which was hurt by a maintenance shutdown and high rainfall, the analysts say. "Despite operational issues in 2022, which are arguably already priced in as these shares are down nearly 20% over the last 9 months, the longer-term investment case for Anglo is compelling," the analysts say. Jefferies rates the stock buy and has a 3,387 pence target price. (anthony.orunagoriainoff@dowjones.com)

Anglo American PLC said Thursday that production in the fourth quarter rose 10%, boosted by the continuing ramp-up at Peru's Quellaveco project, which produced more than 80,000 metric tons of copper.

The FTSE 100 mining company said it expects to produce between 840,000 and 930,000 metric tons of copper in 2023.

Copper production for 2022 was 664,000 metric tons, a 3% rise on 2021's production.

Anglo American forecast that in 2023 it will produce 30 million to 33 million carats of diamonds, 3.6 million to 4.0 million platinum group metals ounces, 57 million to 61 million tons of iron ore, and 38,000 to 40,000 tons of nickel.

Platinum group metals include platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium , and osmium.

For 2022, the group reported that diamond production rose 7% to 34.6 million carats, with platinum group metals down 6% at 4.02 million ounces, iron ore 7% lower at 59.3 million tons, and manganese ore rising 2% to 3.7 million tons.

Steelmaking coal output rose 1% to 15.0 million tons and nickel slipped 5% to 39,800 tons, it said.

Anglo American PLC said Wednesday that rough-diamond sales by its majority-owned De Beers Group rose 7.9% in the first cycle of 2023 compared with the previous cycle, as it benefited from demand over the holiday period.

The FTSE 100 diversified mining company said De Beers sold $450 million worth of diamonds in the first sales cycle of the year, compared with $417 million in tenth and last cycle of 2022 and $660 million in the first cycle of 2022. There are 10 sales cycles each year.

"Consumer demand for diamond jewelry over the 2022 end-of-year holiday season performed well," De Beers Group Chief Executive Bruce Cleaver said.

"While there is still some uncertainty over the macroeconomic environment, we see cautious optimism for demand to increase as China continues to reopen and inflation rates start to decrease in many major economies."

Anglo American said sales are provisional figures due to a change in the company's approach to diamond sales because of pandemic-related movement restrictions around the world. The figures are based on expected sales between Jan. 16 and Jan. 31.

Anglo American loads first LNG dual-fuelled vessel in chartered
fleet, cutting emissions by up to 35%

Anglo American announces that its newly launched LNG dual-fuelled Capesize+ vessel, the Ubuntu Harmony, has loaded its first cargo of iron ore from its Kumba operations in South Africa.

The vessel is the first of ten LNG dual-fuelled new-build ships that Anglo American will introduce to its chartered fleet during the course of 2023 and 2024, delivering an estimated 35% reduction in CO(2) emissions compared to ships fuelled by conventional marine oil fuel. The use of LNG will also lead to a significant reduction of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter from vessel exhausts, while new technology also eliminates the release of unburnt methane.

The Ubuntu fleet is a key component of Anglo American's ambition to achieve carbon-neutrality for its controlled ocean freight by 2040 - with an interim target to reduce emissions from these activities by 30% by 2030 - all part of Anglo American's wider ambition to halve Scope 3 emissions by 2040.

Peter Whitcutt, CEO of Anglo American's Marketing business, said: "We are proud to see the Ubuntu Harmony begin its voyage transporting future-enabling products from our mines to our customers around the world. This milestone cements our vision to be a leader in low carbon shipping, a natural extension of our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality across our operations by 2040."

Nolitha Fakude, Group Director of Anglo American for South Africa, said: "The metals and minerals we provide play an important role in helping key industries decarbonise. Transporting them in a sustainable way is a key part of this effort and the introduction of the Ubuntu fleet - named after the Zulu word meaning 'humanity to others' - helps us accelerate our transition to sustainable ocean freight."

Anglo American has established a comprehensive framework of initiatives for the decarbonisation of its maritime activities, including energy saving devices fitted to existing vessels, the use of voyage optimisation software, and a focus on exploring, trialling and adopting alternative, sustainable fuel options - such as LNG, sustainable biofuel, green methanol and ammonia, and - further down the line - hydrogen

Anglo American PLC said Wednesday that rough-diamond sales by its majority-owned De Beers Group fell in line with expectations in 2022's 10th sales cycle compared with the previous cycle.

The FTSE 100 diversified mining company said De Beers sold $410 million worth of diamonds in the 10th sales cycle of the year compared with $454 million in the ninth cycle. In the 10th cycle of 2021 it sold $336 million worth of diamonds. There are 10 sales cycles each year.

The London-listed multinational mining company said that due to restrictions on the movement of people, De Beers Group implemented a more flexible approach to rough diamond sales during the cycle and that the event extended beyond its normal week-long duration.

It added that because of this, the provisional rough diamond sales figure for the cycle represents expected sales value for the Dec. 5 to Dec. 20 period, adding that it remains subject to adjustment based on final completed sales.

"Demand for our rough diamonds over the final sales cycle of 2022 was in line with expectations, ahead of the normal seasonal closure of polishing factories in southern Africa over the Christmas period and with Sightholders taking a prudent approach ahead of restocking after Christmas and the expected re-opening of the China market," Chief Executive Bruce Cleaver said.
