Thanks for that Kev I picked up on that from airports where the Canaries are treated somewhat differently than other EU countries hence assumed its none participation.

The amount of misinformation around the EU is really shocking. Dunder, you were right about Tenerife. Tenerife, as part of Spain, is very much in the EU. It has special status regarding VAT as some islands/airports do, otherwise it's the same as the rest of Spain and the EU.

Ah ok thanks - yes I remember alcohol was "cheaper" there for that reason I think?
I'd like to live there - but I prefer the North.
Was seriously thinking of getting a place this year but something has now come up which will require my attention so unfortunately probably will not be possible for at least a couple of years.
